The great Spanish pianist Tete Montoliu has recorded many rewarding sessions for SteepleChase. This trio outing (with bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath) is a typically excellent date. In addition to the lesser-known "Theme for Ernie," Montoliu performs five well-known jazz standards in his own modern jazz style, combining together aspects of Bud Powell, McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans. ~ Scott Yanow Tete Montoliu Tete! | | Red Garland Stretching Out CD (2002)
Tete!
$9.89 STRETCHING OUT contains 2 LPs on 1 CD: SATIN DOLL (1959)/LIL' DARLIN' (1959).
When it comes to Red Garland's history as a recording artist, there is good news and bad news. First, the bad news: Garland spent most of the '60s in semi-retirement and didn't get into the studio at all from 1963-1969. Now, the good news: Prestige and its various subsidiaries documented Garland extensively in the late '50s and early '60s. During that period, the influential pianist recorded about 25 sessions as a leader -- and that isn't counting all the Prestige releases that feature him as a sideman. Fantasy, which owns the Prestige catalog, has generally been good about reissuing Garland's work. Assembled by Fantasy in 2002, this 70-minute CD draws on two LPs that Garland recorded in 1959: Satin Doll and Lil' Darlin'. Garland's Prestige output was impressively consistent, and Stretching Out finds him in fine form on both live and studio material. The studio tracks (which include George Gershwin's "The Man I Love" and Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll") were recorded in Rudy Van Gelder's famous New Jersey location, while the live performances ...
| | Miles Davis In Person At The Blackhawk: Complete CDs (2003) Remastered; Box Set
Tete!
$31.45 "Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste.
Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the easy-going ballad "All Of You," where he seems to particularly inspire a laid back bluesy Hank Mobley tenor solo. Mobley, never a Davis favorite, is not the fiery foil he relished, but his buttery tone and imperturbable lyric charm suit the slightly conservative tone of these performances. But in a long reading of "No Blues," Miles pointedly has Wynton Kelly testify briefly in response to his own, almost ...
| | Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges CD (1960) Remastered; Digipak
Tete!
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. Mulligan contributed the gorgeous ballad "What's the Rush" (where he sat back to enjoy Hodges' solo and never plays his own horn), the easygoing swinger "Bunny," and the brisk cooker "18 Carrots (For Rabbit)," the latter which its ...

| | Alan Broadbent Every Time I Think Of You CD (2006)
Tete!
$14.59 Alan Broadbent has long been appreciated as a fine pianist and arranger, talents he combines on this studio effort with bassist Brian Bromberg and drummer Kendall Kay, along with background color by the Tokyo Strings. "Autumn Variations" is a superb workout of the chord changes to the standard "Autumn Leaves." The pianist's lyrical setting of the longing ballad "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess" and the sparse treatment of "Last Night When We Were Young" are simply masterful. Broadbent's scoring of notable jazz compositions proves to be equally effective. He sets up a very deliberate tempo for the ballad "Lover Man," alternating the ...
| | Wonder Years CD (1989) Original Soundtrack
Tete!
$6.09 The cuddly, sepia-warm tones of the hit Fox TV series spill over into this soundtrack, which is redolent with memories of childhood summers, walking in the park, barbecues out back, and all the other good stuff that the show waxed nostalgic about. Of the 13 tracks here, a full seven are covers. These include pop-gospel act Judson Spence's take on Dobie Gray's "Drift Away," Joe Cocker's soulman exertions on the Beatles' "With a Little Help (From My Friends)," and two peace-and-love chestnuts -- the Indigo Girls' version of Dino Valente's "Get Together" and Richie Havens doing Cat Stevens' "Peace Train." There's also Julian Lennon, sounding rather like David Bowie on "Ruby Tuesday." Most of the covers are faithful, if unremarkable; the oddest of the lot is little-known Brit dance-pop act the Escape Club's funked-up version of the Doors' "Twentieth Century Fox" (would that be a plug for the ...

| | Dojo Dimartino Off The Charts CD (2001)
Tete!
$15.19 Dojo (Dimartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra): Vince DiMartino (trumpet, flugelhorn); Miles Osland (soprano & alto saxophones, piccolo, flute, alto & bass flutes, clarinet); Mike Tracy (alto & tenor saxophones, flute); Hunt Butler (alto saxophone, flute); Gordon Towell, David Anderson (tenor saxophone, flute, clarinet); Lisa Osland (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet); Rob Parton, Rich Byrd, Steve Bottom, Tom Brawner, Rick Cook (trumpet); David Henderson, Dave Ashley, Brad Kerns, Lee Watts (trombone); Hap Bourgois (bass trombone); Jim Campbell (vibraphone, bells, percussion); Raleigh Dailey (piano); Will Renshaw (guitar); Larry Nelson (bass); Jason Tiemann (drums).
Vince DiMartino is a graduate of the University of Kentucky's very fine jazz studies program headed by Miles Osland. He and Osland share top billing on this CD, which gives the listener more than 75 minutes of outstanding, disciplined, and exciting big-band music. Osland's influence is prevalent throughout the set. The sound is strikingly similar to those albums he has issued for Sea Breeze and other labels with various Kentucky jazz groups, small and large. Typical of any jazz pack with which Osland is associated, this band is well rehearsed. The ensemble play is tight and dynamic, as with the sax section on the sensuous "Spring Is Here." Soloists improvise, but within the parameters of the arrangements written for each piece. This philosophy is apparent right from the initial cut, "Real Life," as Osland's throbbing alto sax is pushed by the brass instruments in ensemble and by a throw-down-the-gauntlet trumpet solo. The written arrangements present the music at its best and permit the band to show off its finest points, as in Charles Mingus' "Pussy Cat Dues," ...

$18.59 (2-CD set) For a band well into the fourth decade of it's existence to find itself in fashion is a strange concept, yet for Steeleye Span this is proving to be very much the case. Folk music, especially of the English persuasion, is back in vogue thanks

| | Lauren Eyton-Jones Art Grooveau CD (2007)
Tete!
$10.15 “A fresh blend of sweet and soulful songs, Art Grooveau is the new album from Toronto based singer-songwriter Lauren Eyton Jones. Songs such as 14U wouldn't sound out of place on a Hed Kandi mix, whereas Withit has a Portishead vibe with smoky Zero 7-esque vocals.” – Emma Bond, HMV Head Office, England"Lauren is unique talent, a joy to work with in that her vision is quite limitless. Her passion for experimentation and production allowed us to both to push our own boundaries and create something wholly new and exciting. I'm very proud of what we've been able to accomplish together and look forward to working with her again in the future." – Producer Andrew Kilgour“I haven't heard anything like your record come out from anyone in Canada. This record is an inspiration to me and the Canadian music industry. You are a recording artist for sure. The short of it, I haven't stopped listening to your record since I put it in my CD player.” – Adam Baillie, Toronto singer/songwriter“Why are you working here?” – A lady from Lauren Eyton-Jones’s day job”Lauren Eyton-Jones' music sounds like a hybrid of old smoky jazz lounge vocals infused modern electronic sounds; something like sonic velvet. You immediately recognize that the woman knows herself in her sound, and is painting an auditory painting for you with every breath. ...
