| | South American Cookin'/Magnificent Trombone Of Curtis Fuller CD (2001)
Get Out Of Town CD music
$10.59 All of the material on this Curtis Fuller compilation was recorded in 1961 for Epic, though it was made during two separate pairs of sessions by two different lineups for two individual albums. The group on the first date includes Zoot Sims, Tommy Flanagan, Jymie Merritt, and Dave Bailey. The title South American Cookin' doesn't give an accurate description of the first half of the disc, though there is a loping treatment of the sad ballad "Besame Mucho" and a very percussive take of "One Note Samba"; more typical for Fuller are the delightful up-tempo bop numbers like J.J. Johnson's "Wee Dot," in which Sims and the leader lock horns and both play their most stimulating solos, even with a few reed squeaks by the tenor saxophonist. The second portion of the disc originally appeared under the title The Magnificent Trombone of Curtis Fuller, and the leader doesn't disappoint. This time the trombonist is accompanied by Walter Bishop, Jr., Jimmy Garrison or Buddy Catlett on bass, guitarist Les Spann, and drummer Stu ...

When it comes to Red Garland's history as a recording artist, there is good news and bad news. First, the bad news: Garland spent most of the '60s in semi-retirement and didn't get into the studio at all from 1963-1969. Now, the good news: Prestige and its various subsidiaries documented Garland extensively in the late '50s and early ...

| | Stan Getz Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions CD (2003)
Get Out Of Town album
$15.39 First off, these "Lost Sessions" were never actually lost. The music here was supposed to be released as the Stan Getz Quartet's first issue on A&M, and for the usual record company reasons, it was shelved instead. The tapes were in the vault and catalogs, so it's not like they were found in someone's closet. The bottom line is that Getz, already ill at this point, still had the goods. Produced by Herb Alpert (a genius in his own right even if his records don't always hold up), the bossas here are tough, innovative jazz tunes mainly written by Getz's pianist, Kenny Barron. Don't look for the gentle side of Getz that was so beautifully displayed on his early bossa records with Charlie Byrd and ...

| | Channulal Mishra Spirit Of Benares CD (2005)
Get Out Of Town album
$14.29 Channulal Mishra is one of India's most gifted and versatile vocalists, with a rich and wide ranging repertoire. His sonorous voice transcends specific styles of singing, creating music in which the aesthetic and the spiritual merge to great effect. On stage he is a figure of composure, lightly strumming the soothing swarmandal, which resonates colourfully with the notes of his chosen raga. He is equally proficient in classical and light classical music such as dadra, thumri, chaiti, kajri and bhajan, as is demonstrated in this performance recorded live on 8th January 2003 at the Saptak Annual Music Festival held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.Channulal Mishra's music is eclectic, featuring unmistakeable references to Benares, Kirana and Patiala gharanas, three very contrasting traditions of North Indian classical singing, which have all played a meaningful part in the singer's development. He was brought up in an atmosphere of rich musical activity in the ancient, holy city of Benares, starting his vocal training at a young age under the guidance of his father, Badri Prasad Misra. He is also the son-in-law of the late Anokhelal Misra, a great tabla player of Benares tradition. Later his musical vision and skills were refined by Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan and Thakur Jaidev Singh. Having left his home to learn music he was nurtured in the honoured practice of 'guru shishya parampara', a diminishing tradition where the student stays in the home of his or her teacher. Groomed under the watchful eye of the Guru is devoted to the musical and spiritual growth of the student, just as a father is devoted to his own son. In this recital, Channulal Mishra begins with a khayal, a classical rendition of raga Maru Behag. Khayal is the most dominant form of singing in Hindustani classical music, giving great scope to the imagination and individuality of the singer. Khayal singing is marked with melodic elaboration, decorative elegance, sensuousness and romanticism. It invariably combines devotion with romance. Maru ...
