| | Bud Powell At The Golden Circle, Vol. 1 CD - Import Bud Powell Discography of CDs
Bud Powell sounds as if he enjoyed his engagement at the Golden Circle in Stockholm, Sweden. Five CDs have been released from two of his nights at the club and they find him playing in generally good form. Accompanied by a couple of local musicians (bassist Torbjorn Hultcrantz and drummer Sune Spångberg), Powell on the first volume is at his best on "Move," "Relaxin' at Camarillo" and an emotional "I Remember Clifford"; two of the other three songs are brief sketches that are under two minutes long. None of the sets are essential (the first volume clocks in at just 33 minutes) but they will easily be enjoyed by Bud Powell fans. [Steeplechase reissued At the Golden Circle, Vol. 1 on CD in 1995 and included a bonus track: a ten-plus minute read of Barney Kessel's "Swedish Pastry."] ~ Scott Yanow At The Golden Circle, Vol. 1 Music Bud Powell At The Golden Circle, Vol. 1 Songs | 1. | Swedish Pastry | |

| | Bobby Hutcherson Wise One CD (2009)
At The Golden Circle, Vol. 1 music CDs
$14.35 Unlike Bobby Hutcherson's previous super mellow effort For Sentimental Reasons, this recording is charged with increased energy and vitality, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. Hutcherson plays the part of Coltrane's tenor and soprano sax with his vibraphone quite tastefully, while guitarist Anthony Wilson adds a new chordal dimension to the music far different than a woodwind instrument. Pianist Joe Gilman is perfectly matched with his bandmates, a supple, inventive, yet forceful musician who lends great depth to the background, or in tandem with the lead instruments. California drummer and longtime confrère of Hutcherson Eddie Marshall plays as well as ever, while bassist Glenn Richman is the much lesser known but able fifth wheel. The leader is as familiar ...

| | Henry Threadgill This Brings Us To, Vol. 1 CD (2009) Digipak
At The Golden Circle, Vol. 1 CD music
$12.89 Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature sound is subject to guesswork, but it definitely has its own brand of concentrated cohesion. Between Threadgill's scattershot flute and alto sax, the sleek tuba or trombone work of Jose Davila, and Liberty Ellman's thorny electric guitar, sparks are always flying about in a collective ...

At The Golden Circle, Vol. 1 album
$12.35 Recorded live at Concord Boulevard Park, Concord and Western Studios, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Phillip Elwood.
This two-CD set compiles two of the earliest recordings made by Herb Ellis and Ray Brown for Concord in the mid-'70s. The first disc, originally issued as After You've Gone, featuring keyboardist George Duke, tenor saxophonist Plas Johnson, trumpeter Sweets Edison, and drummer Jake Hanna, was recorded at the 1974 Concord Jazz Festival. Duke is the wild card on this performance, because during this time frame he was typically recording and touring with rocker Frank Zappa or leading his own heavily funk recording dates; though he switches back and forth between electric and acoustic piano, he fits in rather well. Edison's poignant muted solo in "Mood Indigo," Brown's blistering blues "Fatty McSlatty," and a raucous treatment of the famous "Meet the Flintstones" television theme are all memorable, but the intricate duet by Ellis and Brown of "Detour Ahead" seems to hush the ...
