| | Lee Morgan Sonic Boom CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Dr Jackle music CDs
$9.45 Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights include the funky "Fathead," the complex "Sneaky Pete," Morgan's lyricism on "I'll Never Be the Same," and the infectious rhythms on "Mumbo Jumbo." This is an undeservedly obscure session. ~ Scott Yanow
This is indeed a welcome curiosity. The 2003 version of Lee Morgan's Sonic Boom was recorded in 1967, was not released until 1979, and then was quickly deleted. When it was reissued on CD in the 1990s, it was only in print for a short time as well. While one might think the third time is the charm, you'd have to reconsider. Blue Note has made the set available as part of its so-called connoisseur series, meaning it will only be available for a limited time once more. Issued in glorious 24-bit remastered sound, Sonic Boom is here re-released along with a huge bonus, a 1969 session that was originally the latter half of the 1978 double-LP The Procrastinator. ...

| | Hank Mobley Another Workout: RVG Series CD (1961)
Dr Jackle CD music
$8.49 This is part of Blue Note's Collector's Choice series. These are limited-edition pressings of a few thousand copies.
This LP has material from 1961 that for no real reason went unreleased until 1985. One song, "Three Coins in a Fountain," is from the same session that resulted in tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's famous Workout session with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The other five numbers -- three obscure Mobley originals, plus "I Should Care" and "Hello Young Lovers" -- are from the previously unheard December 5, 1961 session with the same personnel except for Green. Hank Mobley was in a prime period around this time, and all of his Blue Note recordings are well worth picking up. ~ Scott Yanow
Reviewers called tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley underrated so many times that the word may as well have been his middle name, and when combined with the numerous financial, personal, and health issues that Mobley endured during his career, it all added up to a middle of the pack position in the jazz canon. He truly deserves a reevaluation. This delightfully warm set was cut on December 5, 1961 with Mobley on tenor sax, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums, and consists of four Mobley compositions and ...

| | Plunge Falling With Grace CD (1996)
Dr Jackle songs
$13.35 In the 1990s, Boston had one of the healthiest jazz scenes in the U.S. -- one that offered plenty of avant-garde experimentation as well as a lot of straight-ahead hard bop. Boston had as much bop as Philadelphia and as much avant-garde activity as Lower Manhattan and Chicago. One of the mildly avant-garde combos that surfaced in Beantown in the 1990s was Plunge, a pianoless quartet consisting of trombonist Mark McGrain, tuba player Marcus Rojas, acoustic bassist Avishai Cohen, and drummer Bob Moses. Plunge's debut album, Falling With Grace, is left of center but only slightly so -- this is hardly an album of atonal screaming and blistering free jazz à la Charles Gayle or late-period John Coltrane. Rather, Plunge's specialty is a quirky, eccentric style of acoustic-oriented jazz-funk; for the most part, the group isn't nearly as far to the left as Ornette Coleman & Prime Time or electric bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma. ...

Those who rhapsodize about the gifts of great American songwriters such as Cole Porter and the Gershwin brothers, while bemoaning the current state of popular song, would do well to investigate the work of David Cantor, guitarist and songwriter for Dave's True Story. While the group, which revolves around Cantor and cool postmodern chanteuse Kelly Flint, is often lumped in with the neo-lounge movement, their work is more complex than that categorization would suggest.
UNAUTHORIZED is a great leap forward from the group's previous release ...
