Technical Difficulties
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer)--working primarily within their technical thrash comfort zone ...

Technical Difficulties
$6.49 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by George Marino (1998, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Bon Jovi's 1984 debut not only became a blueprint for the band's multi-platinum releases of later years, but a definitive work for an entire genre. Though scores of short-lived pop-metal bands rocketed to popularity on the success of this release, the time-weathered BON JOVI continues to stand out from the pack.
"Runaway," with its infectious hook and keyboard work from E-Streeter Roy Bittan, was discovered by a New York DJ and gave the band some early exposure. "She Don't Know Me" is a catchy mid-tempo rocker. "Shot Through the Heart" turns the hard-rocking pulse up a few notches, with Richie Sambora letting loose on the kind of solo that would be copied by a plethora of L.A. bands. David Bryan's keyboards, an integral part of the group's sound, work nicely on the melodic rocker "Breakout." At a time when synthesizers dominated the pop landscape, Bon Jovi used them to gloss a heavy-rock foundation. "Come Back" shows the enormity of the charisma and emotion that Jon poured into his singing. BON JOVI is a great debut by a band in its underground, formative stage; a street album from a band hungry to make it.
Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York.
Engineers: Scott Litt, Jeff Hendrickson, Larry Alexander.
Personnel: Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora (vocals, guitar, background vocals); ...
| | Astra Weirding CD (2009)
Technical Difficulties
$10.69 During the late '90s, it seemed like prog rock had finally achieved extinction. But fast forward ten years later and the genre was thriving once more - as evidenced by the arrival of such groups as Astra and their 2009 full-length debut, THE WEIRDING (which includes some very Roger Dean-inspired cover artwork). Hailing from an area not exactly known for spawning prog goliaths (San Diego), THE WEIRDING is not all about fingers flyin' on the fretboard, ...
| | Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow CD (1975) Remastered
Technical Difficulties
$6.55 After British maestro guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in 1974, he recruited Purple Records signees Elf as his backing band. And although Rainbow's 1975 debut was only a hint of future greatness, the album more than holds its own.
Elf was led by dramatic metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who seemed to connect with Blackmore in quite a chemical fashion. "Man on the Silver Mountain" is prime material, as is the six-minute blues-metal classic "Catch the Rainbow." Dio's shining vocals, shown to great effect here, have been emulated by hard rock vocalists throughout the years. "The Temple of the King" is another highlight, showcasing Blackmore's emotional guitar licks. "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" is the group's ode to medieval times. "Still I'm Sad" is an instrumental ...

| | Morrison-Williams Morrison - Williams CD (2005) Reissue; Digipak
Technical Difficulties
$11.75 Considering their history, it's rather surprising that bassist Shayne Morrison and singer Clinton Williams are only just now releasing their debut album. Both are former members of Perfect Stranger, and they've been writing songs together since 2000. None of those songs ever made it into the Perfect Stranger's repertoire, though, nor did any of them make the final cut for the movie Alamo -- they submitted material for that soundtrack, but the director opted for an instrumental score. Undaunted, Morrison-Williams landed a deal with the Palo Duro label and released their self-titled debut, an impressive if slightly uneven collection of songs that happily zigzag back and forth over the line that separates country from straight-up twangy guitar pop. The program-opening ...

| | Network Bishop Kent Manning CD (2009)
Technical Difficulties
$9.95 Are you ready to be sonically assaulted? If you've bravely given the "thumbs up" sign, then the_Network's 2009 exercise on non-stop noise brutality, the curiously titled Bishop Kent Manning (the title comes from a short story written by the group's guitarist, Kevin Howley) is the album for you. These fine chaps from New Hampshire lay the heavy duty riffing and vocal screams on heavy throughout the disc (as well as out-of-left-field "shifts" mid-song). The whole bloody album from beginning to end is one big endurance test as to how far the group can push things to the max, especially such crushing ditties as the album opening "From Holy Water to Holy Waters," ...
