At the end of 1983, Reba McEntire completed her contract with Mercury Records and moved to MCA, launching the new affiliation in the late winter of 1984 with the Top Five country single "Just a Little Love," followed by an album of the same name in April. McEntire had signed to Mercury in 1975, and the label had built her up slowly to the point that, in early 1983, she scored back-to-back number one singles with "Can't Even Get the Blues" and "You're the First Time I've Thought About Leaving." Her decision to move on might be vindicated later, but Just a Little Love was not an auspicious beginning with the new company. McEntire seemed, at least on the evidence of the single, to be moving in more of a contemporary country direction, an impression confirmed by the follow-up single, "He Broke Your Memory Last Night," which reached the Top 20. On the LP, she displayed her versatility, ranging stylistically from the tropical feel of "I'm Gettin' over You" and the pop/rock sound of "Every Second Someone Breaks a Heart" to the Western swing of "Congratulations" and the Bakersfield arrangement for "Silver Eagle." She was a distinctive enough vocalist, with her Oklahoma accent, good intonation, and the restrained throb in her throat, to achieve a good performance no matter what the context, but she still came off like a developing artist rather than an established ...

Bill Kirchen's credentials as a guitarist have been well established and justly lauded since his stint with Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen (1967-1976). Since then he's lent his string prowess to a number of performers (notably touring with Nick Lowe around the time of his IMPOSSIBLE BIRD album). Kirchen began recording under his own name in earnest in the '90s, keeping his trio intact for nearly a decade. Drummer Jack O'Dell and bass player Johnny Castle continue to lend the proceedings a seamless sense of interplay. Assorted guests on steel guitar, piano, and a few other instruments add sparkle and color, never overplaying.
As with earlier efforts there's a smooth mix of originals and either obscure or surprising covers. In the latter category is the rousing, album-closing take on Bob Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues." Also of note is the rich Bakersfield sound of the truck-driving classic "Roll Truck Roll"--a song originally performed by Red Simpson ...

Todd Rundgren's supporting tour for his Nearly Human album was eventful one, partially because he was supporting his first hit in years, partially because the album was his best in years, and partially because he wound up recording a full new album, Second Wind, toward the end of the journey. The January 10, 1990, concert that constitutes Bootleg Series, Vol. 3: Nearly Human Tour, Japan 90 was recorded before Second Wind, during the Sturm and Drang of the actual promotional tour, and Rundgren hauls out almost all of Nearly Human, leaving only two songs behind. Apart from that album, he samples from his past, touching on fan favorites like the opener "Real Man" and the hits "Can We Still Be Friends" and "Hello, It's Me," as well as turning to Utopia for "Love in Action" and "Mated." Since he's backed by a band suited for the blue-eyed soul of Nearly Human, there is a bit of that bent here -- but not too much, since "Love in Action" still rocks like Utopia's version -- yet it's also true that the song ...
