One of the bands that not only dominated the charts for most of the 80s, but they also typified the type of music that will be looked back on as 'the sound of the 80s'. Their sometimes Germanic electronic pop became softer on this album. They were becoming more of a band, and they were 'rockin', just a little. Keyboards still dominated but the melody seemed less regimented. Vocalist Dave Gahan excelled, as his voice grew in power. In a year or two they would become stadium rock stars, and change forever. The reissued CD had a number of excellent bonus tracks including some interesting remixed material. Initially the title must have sounded like an incredibly pretentious boast, except that Depeche Mode then went on to do a monstrous world tour, score even more hits in America and elsewhere than ever before, and pick up a large number of name checks from emerging house and techno artists on top of all that. Depeche Mode in the early-1980s existed on two fronts, equally deft at crafting intricately soul-baring albums and unleashing unforgettable dance-club ready hits. THE SINGLES 1981-1985, basically an extension of the earlier set CATHING UP WITH..., focuses on the latter. In its early stages, Depeche Mode's songs were more compactly packed; Gore's lyrics still wandered through the dark recesses of the human existence, but tended for the barrage over the slowly built sucker punch. The 1983 follow-up to Johnny Warman's Australian hit, Walking into Mirrors, but not destined for anywhere near the attention of its predecessor, From the Jungle to the New Horizons nevertheless follows very much in that album's electrifying mode, hurling the best in current recording technology into the mix and taking full advantage of his backing band as well -- Peter Gabriel worked with several of the same musicians (Jerry Marotta, Tony Levin), and the first few tracks here certainly relish such parentage.
