INTERNAL WRANGLER, the 2001 release from noisy indie rockers Clinic, features 13 tracks including "Second Line" and "Distortions."
Although there is much to admire, the real highlight of Clinic's INTERNAL WRANGLER is the voice of lead singer Ade Blackburn. While he's been compared to everyone from Lou Reed to Radiohead's Thom Yorke, none of the comparisons manage to do him any real justice. Blackburn's voice sets Clinic apart from the endless slew of Britpop bands that seem to hit it big on a regular basis; while the guitar, bass, and drums on the record are all solid, it's his vocals that provide the "love it or hate it" element. Blackburn's lyrics are often terrifyingly bleak: at one point, he sings "you cannot know how often/ I've pictured you in coffins/ my baby in a coffin." At other junctures, as on the track "The Second Line," he doesn't even try to craft a tale and simply mutters and mumbles over the music. INTERNAL WRANGLER is also not beset by the need for slick production or glossy perfection; there are plenty of little mistakes here and there, but they only serve to humanize the record, and leave more room for experimentation.

$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

$14.29 John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead ...

| | Luck-One & Dekk Beautiful Music CD (2009)
Internal Wrangler
$9.35 Luck-One & Dekk: Beautiful MusicHailing from two different regions, and approaching the music with from two different perspectives, emcee Luck-One and producer Dekk come together seamlessly to put forth what will be the debut project for them both on the short length album entitled Beautiful Music, a non-profit offering set to raise awareness about the plight of those in Haiti, the western hemisphere’s poorest nation.Introduced through a mutual acquaintance in late summer of ’08, just weeks after Luck was released from serving over half a decade in Oregon prisons, Luck and Dekk, a University of Oregon graduate who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, began their relationship discussing hip-hop and the direction it was to take in the new millennium. Soon, Luck was making bi-weekly Greyhound trips down to Dekk’s in home studio in Salem, and those discussions would slowly become the foundation of their stellar debut, completed less than five months from their first conversation.Beautiful Music is daring, yet cohesive. Awe inspiring in it’s ability to push the envelope with Dekk’s often eclectic production, while at the same time remain undeniably hip-hop through Luck-One’s true school lyricism, this is an album that is sure to please. Throughout, Luck’s gripping rhyme schemes are flawlessly interwoven with Dekk’s irrefutably next-level soundscapes, drenched in his signature synth-heavy sound, and backed by the sparse drum patterns that add to the tracks without taking away from the urgent messages that frame them. The lead track 80’s Back, is a pulsing ode to a time that seemed more simple, while The Coolax is a mellow head nodder loosely framed around the concept of different art forms and their interconnectedness. Prince wit’ A Thousand’s rugged guitar riffs give Luck the breathing room necessary to prove that he is an MCs’ MC as he adroitly bobs and weaves through a staccato drum pattern, oozing hip-hop swagger and undeniable charisma.Powerful enough in it’s message to transcend it’s genre classification, yet loaded with the hardscrabble morality tales and inner-city realism that speaks to the streets, the duo succeeds in their effort to captivate listeners across the spectrum. With their aggressive marketing strategies already taking shape in the form of over 2,500 downloads within the first month since Beautiful Music’s release constant spins on terrestrial, internet, college and community radio stations up and down the west coast, Northwest tour dates lined ...
