Guitarist/pianist Tony Macalpine had been combining elements of jazz-rock fusion into his neo-classical style with varying results since the early '90s, but it wasn't until Evolution that he finally came up with the right mixture. Much more than a mere technician, Macalpine demanded more input from his sidemen here, bassist Tony Franklin and drummer Mark Kener, in order to achieve a more mature musical statement. Together the trio manages to pull off the difficult task of creating interesting instrumental music that is far removed from the genre's typical self-indulgent acrobatics. With that consideration, this is still a predominately shred-oriented session, but the fusion-influenced tracks such as "Time Table" and "Futurism" prove to be the more interesting moments. There are also two classical pieces here, one played on piano and the other on synthesizer and guitar. This is one of Macalpine's more complete releases and offered a promising glimpse into his more fusion-oriented endeavors he would explore with Planet X and CAB. ~ Robert Taylor

Evolution album
$14.59 After Yngwie Malmsteen set the guitar world on fire with his 1984 debut, Rising Force, it was amazing how quickly the clones came out of the woodwork. Within a couple years there were dozens of them, flooding the market with their recorded instrumental extravaganzas. Tony MacAlpine was one of the Yngwie followers, to a certain degree. His debut album, Edge of Insanity, with its all-star rhythm section of Steve Smith and Billy Sheehan (drums and bass, respectively), follows ...

| | Gil Scott-Heron From South Africa To South Carolina CD (1976)
Evolution music CDs
$10.09 Principally recorded at D&B Sound, Silver Springs, Maryland in 1975; live at the Wax Museum, Washington DC; live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York in 1979; live at Blues Alley, Washington DC in 1981. Includes liner notes by Gil Scott-Heron.
The collaboration between Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson was now a formal one, as they were issuing albums as a team. This was their second duo project to make the pop charts, and it included anti-nuclear and anti-apartheid themes, plus less political, more autobiographical/reflective material like "Summer of '42," "Beginnings (The First Minute of a New Day)," and "Fell Together." Scott-Heron was now a campus and movement hero, and Jackson's production and arranging savvy helped make his albums as arresting musically as they were lyrically. ~ Ron Wynn
Digitally remastered by Malcolm Cecil.

| | Loudness Hurricane Eyes CD (1987)
Evolution album
$9.69 Though it failed to equal the mostly novelty-based sales of Loudness' first internationally distributed album Thunder in the East, Lightning Strikes had handily managed to translate the band's Japanese-bred heavy metal into a more easily digestible recipe for Western audiences. Because this progress didn't translate into sales, however, their record company, Atco, felt the need to force the band's hand toward an even more pop-metal direction when it came time to record their next effort. Yet, while producer Max Norman's work on Lightning Strikes had merely served to trim the excess fat from Loudness' rather busy compositions, new hire Andy Johns would show no such restraint in his mission to completely disfigure the band's sound. 1987's misguided Hurricane Eyes was the result. With their generic riffs and ...

| | Ho: A Dan Band Christmas CD (2006)
Evolution songs
$11.99 Singer/actor/comedian Dan Finnerty weighs in with a humorous holiday collection on Ho: A Dan Band Christmas. Finnerty's willingness to spew expletives and their variations (friggin' and frickin' are favorites) introduces a vulgar vernacular to his Christmas sentiments, which are in themselves non-traditional. Basically, as he states in such songs as "I Wanna Rock U Hard This Xmas" and "Get Drunk & Make Out This Christmas," he'd just as soon dispense with the usual gift-giving and celebrate the season more intimately. Happily, he also has a few other things on his mind. As a performer who has made a point of covering songs associated with female performers, he is sensitive to the neglect suffered by Santa's better half ("Mrs. Claus"); he takes a broad-based view of the holiday celebrations of different cultures in "Christmakwanzakah"; and he hopes for a temporary cease-fire in "Please Don't Bomb Nobody This Holiday." The humor in ...
| | Hail Aquavine CD (2008)
Evolution album
$10.65 Wesley Bowers has been involved with music ever since he can remember and has been creating music for almost as long. First off, he comes from a musical family. His father, Elledge, was a drummer and his mother, AlveAnn, a singer. His brothers play a variety of instruments and then there’s Wesley . . . he composes. With keen insight and a practiced ear he’s able to weave an array of rhythms and non-traditional melodies into the sounds of Generation Next. These thread their way through his electronic compositions and that are the work of AQUAvine. Whimsical, creative and edgy, his album, Hail AQUAvine, is an eclectic montage with a great depth of musical expression. Hail AQUAvine has something for everyone and then some. Wesley is a natural at composing music and creating arrangements of all types. His electronic compositions and arrangements span a seemingly infinite variety of styles and approaches ranging from pop to techno. If you spend any time with him you’ll soon hear him popping and tapping out the latest rhythms of some new song that has entered his head. At any given moment he may begin to hum melodic fragments as ...
