| | Tommy Castro Hard Believer CD (2009)
Mojo Boogie! CD music
$14.29 Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator
You might think that Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator--and twelfth overall --would mark a departure for this longtime rocking soulman. But despite a fuller sound, fleshed out with Lenny Castro's percussion and boosted by an ever-present horn section led by longtime cohort Keith Crossan, this is another typically solid effort from the singer/guitarist. Veteran producer/musician John Porter returns to join Castro's strong, husky vocals--a cross between Delbert McClinton, James Brown, and Bob Seger--to a rather slick, radio-friendly approach. It's a marked change from Castro's anything-goes concerts where the songs are tightly rehearsed, yet open for improvisation. Still, ...

| | Dick50 Acquired Taste CD (2009) Digipak
Mojo Boogie! CD music
$14.05 ACQUIRED TASTE was produced by Don Was and recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles. He might seem a strange producer for McClinton, who has had a consistent "sound" for decades, despite his wide array of stylistic adventures. But Was is better than anybody who has produced his records since the late '70s: he understands that McClinton's voice is showing signs of age, and that that's not a bad thing. Using members of the singer's road band and ...
| | Artistry Of Wes Montgomery CD (1992)
Mojo Boogie! music CDs
$9.89 Since the bulk of Montgomery's greatest recordings were made for Riverside, this collection could have been better, but there's nothing about this disc that suggests it's intended to be definitive. Instead, it mixes a few of the guitarist's most famous performances ("Four on Six") with classic album tracks ("Cariba") and some downright obscure material ("Klact-Oveeseds-Tene") that was previously available only on The Complete Riverside Recordings box. It's not bad, really, although fans will find nearly all of Montgomery's Riverside albums worth exploring on their own. ~ Jim Smith
Recorded at Plaza Sound Studios and Reeves Sound Studios, New York City; United Recording Studios, Los Angeles; and live at Tsubo's, Berkeley, California.
Personnel: Wes Montgomery (guitar); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Margaret Rose (harp); Winston Collymore, Paul Winter , Sylvan Shulman, Mac Ceppos, Samuel Rand, Isadore Zir, David Nadien, Harry Lookofsky (violin); Ralph Hersh, Burt Fisch (viola); Lucien Schmit, Kermit Moore (cello); Phil Bodner (woodwinds); Harold Land, Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Joe Gordon (trumpet); Victor Feldman, Dick Hyman, Hank Jones , Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris , Wynton Kelly, Buddy Montgomery (piano); Melvin Rhyne (organ); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); ...
| | Paul DeLay Take It From The Turnaround CD (1996)
Mojo Boogie! songs
$13.85 TAKE IT FROM THE TURNAROUND compiles material from Paul DeLay's albums THE OTHER ONE and PAULZILLA.
Combining the best of two albums (1991's Just This One and 1992's Paulzilla) on one CD, Take It from the Turnaround heralds the arrival of a harp player who's been a certified blues legend in his native region of Portland, OR. DeLay blows with authenticity and a full command of his instrument and way more than a hint of reckless abandon. Traditional blues, even by modern bar-band standards, this ain't, but the high creative level of deLay's songwriting on numbers like "Second Hand Smoke," "Merry Way" and the heartfelt "Just This One" heralds the arrival of a new way of looking at things and bodes well for future recordings. As a parenthetical note, the liner notes that accompany ...
| | Ray Charles Blues Is My Middle Name CD (2001)
Mojo Boogie! album
$6.59 The liner notes admit few details about the origins of these dozen songs, except to say that it's a "largely, previously unreleased selection of blues flavored tracks," and that they were recorded during Charles' stint at the independent Warwick imprint before he forged that fruitful relationship with Atlantic Records. It's certain that these do come from the early, pre-Atlantic years of Charles' career, even though about half of the titles appear on pre-Atlantic Charles compilations like The Birth of a Legend and Complete Swing Time & Down Beat Recordings ...
