| | Iron Maiden The X Factor CD (1995) Vinyl Replica; Limited Edition; Digipak
Savage Poetry
$17.15 When longtime vocalist Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden in 1993, many fans feared that the band was finished. But the rest of the band decided to stick it out, finding a replacement in ex-Wolfsbane frontman "Blaze" Bayley. On Maiden's first recording with Bayley, 1995's THE X FACTOR, the band sticks to the same musical direction of its early-'90s work: straightforward, heavy tunes.
Bayley's voice couldn't have been more different than that of his predecessor. While Dickinson sang in a higher register (often in an operatic style), Bayley was more of a bassy, low-down belter--just listen to such tracks as "Man on the Edge" and "Lord of the Flies" for proof. Unfortunately, the new lineup didn't have the same staying power as the Dickinson-fronted era, lasting for only one more recording.
Suffering from a lack of powerful riffs and tightly written songs, The X Factor is a lackluster latter-day album from Iron Maiden. Although the band doesn't sound particularly bad on the record, they don't sound inspired and there's a noticeable lack of energy to the performances which makes the lack of imagination all the more apparent. There's a few cuts that almost deliver the goods, but it's not enough to raise The X Factor above the merely adequate. [On all of Iron ...
| | Axel Rudi Pell Knights Live CDs (2002)
Savage Poetry
$11.65 Why is it that when Axel Rudi Pell plays live, his act is more reminiscent of Ronnie James Dio with an amazing guitar player than it is the generic brand of heavy metal he is usually associated with? Knights Live, despite it's sometimes ridiculous stage banter -- that recalls the excesses of Ted Nugent's vocalist Derek St. Holmes in the 1970s -- offers a completely unadorned, unvarnished concert recording. This thing kicks ass. Forget Yngwie, Pell's brand of tough, overdriven , balls-out rock is exactly what the heavy genre needs infused into its veins. There is no pose, no image, no sword-and-sorcery nonsense -- despite the title and the cover ...

| | Tiles Window Dressing CD (2004)
Savage Poetry
$14.35 On their fourth album, Tiles continue to demonstrate that progressive rock doesn't have to mean either goofy pseudo-mysticism or wanky bloviation. That's not to say that these guys are exactly concise -- the album's title track runs over 17 minutes -- but they generally avoid the standard prog rock trap of trying to impress through empty grandiosity. Even when their songs are on the long side, they're skillfully and tightly crafted and the playing is disciplined and interesting. That's especially true on the instrumentals; "Stop Gap" and "Unicornicopia," both of which feature guest violinist Matthew Parmenter, offer spikily complex rock and nicely unsentimental neoclassicism, respectively, and are among the album's more impressive and enjoyable moments, and "A.02" is a lovely little new acoustic miniature. As for the songs, the metal-flavored "Paintings" and "Capture the Flag" are both enjoyably dense and crunchy and feature fine, clear singing by Paul Rarick. Overall, ...
| | Tom Waits Swordfishtrombones CD (1983)
Savage Poetry
$6.49 Though Tom Waits had spent most of the '70s establishing himself as one of America's most distinctive singer-songwriters, SWORDFISHTROMBONES found him reinventing himself and creating one of the most original sounds in popular music. Leaving behind his Kerouac-influenced lyrics and lounge-lizard piano-bar stylings for an unprecedented eclecticism that merged Brecht-Weill artsong, Captain Beefheart-style avant blues, Harry Partch-inspired junkyard percussion, along with a healthy dose of everything else but the kitchen sink.
All this sonic exoticism would be for naught where it not accompanied by equally striking, arch songwriting. SWORDFISHTROMBONES moves from the Ken Nordine-style recitative of "Frank's Wild Years" and the demented Delta blues of "Gin Soaked Boy" to the marimba-laced shaggy-dog tale "Shore Leave" and the crazed, Loony Tunes instrumental "Dave the Butcher."
The blazed a trail that Waits (and countless imitators) would follow fruitfully for years to come, and remains one of the most impressive recordings not just of Waits's career, but of anyone's.
Recorded in August 1982.
Composer: Tom Waits.
Personnel: Tom Waits (vocals, guitar, fiddle, harmonium, synthesizer); Crystal Gayle (vocals); Fred Tackett (guitar, electric guitar, banjo); Carlos Guitarlos (guitar, electric guitar); Dennis Budimir (guitar); Anthony Stewart, Anthony Clark (bagpipe); Stephen Hodges (harmonica, drums); Francis Thumm (harmonica, glass armonica, anklung); Les Thompson (harmonica); Pete Jolly (accordion, piano); Teddy Edwards (saxophone); Randall ...

| | Flat Earth Society Psychoscout CD (2006) (Import) Digipak; Belgium
Savage Poetry
$13.95 Flat Earth Society has been making some great, adventurous big-band music for almost a decade, but they're only starting to gain attention outside their native Belgium. Mike Patton helped raise their profile by releasing Isms, a collection taken from their previous four releases, but Psychoscout is their first album of new material to be released worldwide. Leader Peter Vermeersch's compositions share some similarities with Willem Breuker: episodic writing that moves quickly from theme to theme with a healthy dose of humor, but FES doesn't have the almost slapstick element that Breuker's Kollektief can have. Vermeersch's tunes are highly cinematic, and would be put to good use in an exciting chase scene ("In Between Rivers," "Lax") or a hard-boiled detective flick ("Lie to Me"). The players ...
