SIN CITY features industrial metal band Genitorturers and includes "Sin City," "Terrorvision," and "One Who Feeds."
Florida's Genitorturers are of that rare breed whose music will never live up to the maker: leader Gen preaches torture fetishes and extreme S&M erudition and stages intense performances with Caligula-like unmentionables. Sin City, the band's second full-length, mechanizes and bleaches the heavy pound of the darker dissertation 120 Days of Genitorture. Gen just wants to have fun reworking societal mores, but this time she's operating from the inside: a carnal carnival atmosphere, an AC/DC cover and a conceptual sex strain are candy-coatings that scream mainstream. Once she lures the unsuspecting inside these black grooves, she will do with them what she will. Genitorturers may never harness their psyche-scarring live vibe on CD, but Sin City still kicks and claws with some downright delectable tracks ("One Who Feeds," "Razor Cuts"). And after discovering the great pop-secret of subversive substance under a commercial sheen, Gen may yet unleash a brilliant piece of work. She is straining to be the warped ringmaster who dictates the perverse practices of a generation, and this deliciously decadent vinyl veers in the right direction. Sin City snarls in an unnerving Mechanical Animals vein, but many may find Gen a preferable presence to lead them through the aural plateaus of pleasure and pain. ~ Doug Stone

Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist ...

Exploding into the stale vacuum of music in 1976 were four lads from the working-class burg known as Queens, New York: The Ramones! Projecting non-image as image, the Ramones invented worlds with every new song, populating their fantasies with characters like Sheena The Punk Rocker and Suzy The Headbanger. They were successful simply because they knew how to write great rock & roll--all energy, swagger and bravado; no solos, no chops, and no classical themes sprucing up concept albums.
Though Joey Ramone's lyrical concerns often focus on horror movies, there's a song for every occasion, whether you want to sniff some glue, score some horse on "53rd & 3rd," or make out with a "Babysitter." The story goes that The Ramones were originally going to play covers, but discovered it was easier to just write their own songs. In truth, they wrote maybe one or two tunes, then re-wrote them and re-wrote them, creating albums of minimalist anthems and universes out of the same few chords and themes. Far from a comprehensive overview of Delbert McClinton's four decade career, this is an enjoyable yet relatively brief disc focusing entirely on covers of classic R&B material. Compiled from the rugged Texas singer's four early solo albums recorded from 1974 through 1979, it shines a light onto McClinton's varied influences as well as being a consistently enjoyable listen.
A cursory scan of the song titles initially indicates there's not much exciting here. Many of these classics such as Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Turn on Your Lovelight," Fats Domino's "Blue Monday," and Don Covay's "Have Mercy" are well known through either their original versions or numerous renditions throughout the years.
