Best of the S.O.S. Band songs C." Bryant (keyboards, vocals); John Alexander Simpson (bass, vocals); James Earl Jones III (drums, vocals); Jerome "JT" All songs written by James Harris III and Terry Lewis except "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" (Harold Clayton/Sigidi) and "What's Wrong With Our Love Affair?" (Jason Bryant). Best of the S.O.S. Band album Like all greatest-hits or best-of compilations, this one is missing some key ingredients, namely "S.O.S. (Dit Dit Dit Dat Dat Dat Dit Dit Dit)" and "Just the Way You Like It." Since the band didn't record tons of material and was only active a short time, the omissions are hard to fathom. Best of the S.O.S. Band CD music It's not like they didn't have room on the CD; only ten songs are compiled here. Best of the S.O.S. Band music CDs Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are well represented with eight songs. Best of the S.O.S. Band songs Despite the omissions, this is still good listening. Best of the S.O.S. Band album Mary Davis' vocals are irresistible; she can do it all. On "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," she shows her funk side, matching the driving, disco-like beat with some powerful vocals. | sos truely stands for sound of success I have always been a great fan of the SOS BAND and i used to have this album on vinyl many years ago (showing my age now) This band truely was the best band around in the 80's and to have all the greatest hits on one cd could't be better. It is an outstanding album which is second to none. If you purchase this album you will not be dissapointed as i wasn't. That was only my opion, but to have your own just buy this cd and you will see that i was right. CD Universe "You really are the best PLACE for MUSIC" MUCH RESPECT !!!! | Funky Eighties Soul Jams! This is required listening in all college freshman level music appreciation courses. Awesome rythms; eclectic keyboards; sexy vocals; understandable lyrics; funky beat; rocking bass; What more could you want? This is what MUSIC was meant to be and will become once again! I especially treasure the cut 'No One's Gonna Love You' blasting out of the car's speakers during a long, winding, carefree, Friday night cruise. Enjoy! By melgaljour (Colorado Springs, CO) |
| Where Did Music Like This Go? The SOS Band is probably one of the best R&B groups of the 80's. I recently heard Just Be Good to Me on the radio and remembered how much I enjoyed their music. The music and the vocals are souful and upbeat. It brought me back to my high-school days. I searched for this CD everywhere, but could not find it. I was very happy to discover that CD Universe offered it. I only wish the bands of today produced music like the SOS Band. By bdoll17590 (Huntersville, NC, USA) |

Angela Winbush Ultimate Collection CD (2001) Top Seller
Best of the S.O.S. Band album Recorded between 1981 and 1996. Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
Digitally remastered by Gavin Lurssen (The Mastering Lab, Hollywood, California).
While the title of The Ultimate Collection may be overstating the matters somewhat, this 17-track compilation does come very close to fulfilling the title's promise. This compilation concentrates on Angela Winbush's late-'80s recordings for Mercury, dipping into the early '80s and early '90s on occasion, so some may complain that it's too focused on a particular era, yet that helps the collection, since that's when Winbush was at her best. Relying on single versions, radio mixes, and edits (though there are several album versions here, as well), this gives a good portrait of what Winbush was all about -- smooth urban soul, graced with exceptional vocals. Her material may not always be first-rate, but her performances are usually impassioned, and this collection makes an excellent case for her talents. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Compilation producer: Pat Lawrence.

One Way Best of One Way: Featuring Al Hudson & Alicia Myers CD (1996) Top Seller
Best of the S.O.S. Band CD music Recorded between 1976 and 1987. Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
Originally, One Way came out as Al Hudson & the Soul Partners and recorded a few interesting, but unsuccessful albums for ABC Records. They were then, and are now, a self-contained act, though the original name suggests a standup vocal group. Essentially, Midwest wonders, they never crossed over, and never got as big as predicted on the R&B circuit, despite having a devastating live act. They should have added their bassist/falsetto tenor, Kevin McCord to the title; he contributes as much as Hudson & Myers, if not more.
This best of compilation ignores their Al Hudson & the Soul Partner days, and is top heavy with upbeat jams. Like an even handed boxer, One Way could deliver a lethal blow with either hand, being equally as proficient on fast tunes or ballads. The slow jams take a back seat to upbeat cookers, but MCA did include "Something In the Past," and the love happy "Lady You Are" One Way's jams had the juice of a live electrical wire: "Mr. Groove," "You Can Do It," "Pop It," and "Pull Fancy Dancer Pull" represents disco at its best. ~ Andrew Hamilton

Loose Ends Best Of CD (2003) Top Seller
Best of the S.O.S. Band album The only U.S. chart hit not featured on the Best Of Loose Ends compilation from EMI U.K. is "You Can't Stop the Rain." Most of the other significant moments in Loose Ends' history are provided here, making it the one disc to snap up, since all of the group's albums were uneven affairs. The biggest singles -- "Hangin' on a String (Contemplating)," "Stay a Little While, Child," "Slow Down," "Watching You," "Don't Be a Fool" -- are included, but a couple key album tracks are missing in action. Even with the minor gaffes, this should be all the Loose Ends that you'll need. Unless a very similar compilation comes along someday to right the wrongs, look for this one. ~ Andy ...
