Mozart: Le Nozze Di Figaro
$13.75 In an era when the definition of religious music has expanded to include everything from Christian death-metal to gospel rap, it's nice to know one can still find an album of traditional prayerful tunes. MORE THAN 50 MOST LOVED HYMNS collects popular church songs performed in a sweeping orchestral/choral style that will evoke warm memories of the grand holiday cathedral services of yesteryear.
Perhaps inspired by the sounds of angels on high, the music here is majestic in a vintage MGM film-score manner, complete with huge string sections, tinkling harp, and vocals soaring to the heavens. Highlights include the Celtic-tinged "This Is My Father's World," which features an Irish pennywhistle, and a particularly exuberant version of "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee," which promises to uplift even the most spiritually bereft. The perfect soundtrack to a devout Easter or Christmas celebration, MORE THAN 50 MOST LOVED HYMNS is equally good for the ears and the soul.

Mozart: Le Nozze Di Figaro
$12.89 Tenor saxophonist and composer Ned Otter is an old-fashioned player in all the best senses of the term. Though a technical master of his horn, he impresses you with his chops without letting them distract you from the music; though well-versed in several generations of styles, he doesn't drag you along on an exhausting journey through jazz history in order to demonstrate his musical erudition. He has a skill set that is rare in jazz musicians: a combination of top-notch technique and exquisite melodic taste. (Having sidemen of the caliber of Billy Higgins and Harold Mabern, not to mention the fine bassist Dennis Irwin, doesn't hurt either, of course.) Otter broadcasts his intentions somewhat with an album title that sounds like it was lifted from the hard bop catalogs of Contemporary or Prestige circa 1955, and neither the tunes nor the playing will disappoint on that score: solid but relaxed renditions of the title track, "Tenderly," and Wes Montgomery's "Road Song" offer some of the album's high points, as do the two Otter originals, "Been There Before" and "Black Sunday," the latter a lovely jazz waltz. The bass is perhaps just a bit too far back in the mix, but that's about the only flaw in this wonderful album. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
Tenor saxophonist/composer Ned Otter's new release "Powder Keg" was recorded in the legendary Van Gelder studio. This is Ned's third release for Two and Four, and considering the incendiary performances turned in by the brilliant quintet, "Powder Keg" is
Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
