$9.55 Personnel: Tom Araya (vocals); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums). Audio Mixer: Greg Fidelman. Editor: Dan Monti. Photographer: Andrew Stewart. Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and ...

| | Five Finger Death Punch War Is The Answer CD (2009)
Obsession
$11.59 Lyricists: Mick Ralphs; Paul Rogers . Personnel: Ivan Moody (vocals); Zoltan Bathory, Jason Hook (guitar); Jeremy Spencer (drums). Audio Mixers: Randy Staub ; Kevin Churko. Recording information: Gump Punch Studios, Las Vegas (04/2009-06/2009); Hit Track Studios, Las Vegas (04/2009-06/2009); The Dojo, Las Vegas (04/2009-06/2009). Five Finger Death Punch stormed rock radio in 2007 with "The Bleeding" (from debut album THE WAY OF THE FIST), a powerful, emotionally tense track that matched vintage, Metallica-style thrash with a throat-shredding chorus more typical of late aughts metalcore. The Los Angeles-based band's sophomore disc WAR IS THE ANSWER mines much of the same territory as that breakout song, keeping the flame of the classic `80s Four Horsemen sound alive with snap-tight chugga-chugga guitar rhythms, minor-key, classical music-inspired clean/acoustic passages, and vocals dripping with a James Hetfield-approved combination of sensitive angst and macho defiance. First single "Hard to See" backs a catchy, harmony-vocal laden melody with a syncopated groove so rhythmically engaging it could almost be called funky, while the closing track "War is the Answer" takes a classic-sounding ...
| | Between The Buried And Me The Great Misdirect CD (2009)
Obsession
$11.49 Lyricist: Tommy Rogers. Personnel: Tommy Rogers (vocals, keyboards); Dustie Waring (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, slide guitar); Dan Briggs (fretless bass); Blake Richardson (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Jamie King. Photographer: Chuck Johnson . After Between the Buried and Me pushed metalcore purists away with their most progressive release, COLORS, they decided to push even harder for their fifth release. A diverse outing with an unruly amount of genres crammed into only six songs, THE GREAT MISDIRECT is a highly adventurous, very convoluted, wildly dynamic, and extremely difficult listen. Briggs, Waring, Rogers, Waggoner, and Richardson are in top form, with their script-flipping abilities intact and their technical chops at their most extreme. This is a guitarists' album first and foremost (although bass players and drummers are in for a treat, as well), and the playing, while showy, is incendiary. Like a cross between Dream Theater (whom they toured with in 2008) and Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me meld creative aptitude and roaring fury as they skate genres, stapling together speed metal, ...

Obsession
$8.99 Brand New Sin: Joe Altier (vocals); Kenny Dunham, Kris Wiechmann (guitar); Chuck Kahl (bass instrument); Kevin Dean (drums). Because Brand New Sin singer Joe Altier's tuneful growling style rings quite similar to that of many a mid-2000s commercial hard rock singer (Scott Stapp and Chad Kroeger, to name but two), some listeners may hastily and unfairly dismiss this Syracuse quintet as yet another face in an already mundane crowd. But just a little bit of patience will be enough to prove that Brand New Sin and their second album, 2005's Recipe for Disaster, actually offer a whole lot more; typical, barn-burning tracks like "Arrived," "Days Are Numbered," or the excellent "The Loner" more accurately falling somewhere between Corrosion of Conformity (yes!), Black Label Society (hmmm?), and, yes, a little bit of Nickelback, too (ugh!). And yet, this is only the tip of the group's ...

| | In The Nursery Era CD (2007) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Obsession
$17.09 As Klive and Nigel Humberstone's remarkable musical partnership reaches its 25th year, the minds behind In the Nursery celebrate with another striking album, Era. Though the title is suggestive of a compilation or overview, the brothers instead create another collection of new songs, based around themes of architecture and urban design, easily including some of their most dramatic work yet in the process. The sweeping electronic/orchestral romanticism that has defined most of their albums remains intact but there is a new fluidity that's quite compelling. The opening "Blueprint" demonstrates this brilliantly, familiar elements such as Dolores C. Marguerite's voice and strong drumming (provided in part by David Elektrik), not to mention storming, swooping strings, shot through with low textured murmurs and an almost disorienting mix. The suggestion is of monumentalism given a dreamlike quality, an appropriate start for the album. ...
