WHO'S MAKING LOVE... JOHNNIE TAYLOR is a budget-priced release by Stax artist Johnnie Taylor, including "Who's Making Love," "I'm Not The Same Person," and "Hold On This Time."

Former preacher Johnnie Taylor had already recorded a few songs on Sam Cooke's SAR label before he signed with Stax and released his first solo LP in 1966. Two years later the man called "the Philosopher of Soul" hit the top of the R&B charts with his breakthrough album, WHO'S MAKING LOVE. Produced by Al Jackson and Don Davis, WHO'S MAKING LOVE mixes elements of gospel-influenced blues and soul, while Johnnie's impassioned preacher-at-the-pulpit vocals tell tales of love and pain, romance gone wrong, suspicion, and jealousy. This inspired sophomore effort heralded the arrival of an exceptional solo singer and marked the beginning of a string of successes with Stax that would make Johnnie Taylor the label's all-time highest selling artist.

The song "Who's Making Love?" was among Johnnie Taylor's biggest chart hits, with Taylor's tough but impassioned vocal supported by a potently energetic performance by the usual Stax Records crew (including Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and the Memphis Horns. But Who's Making Love, the album assembled to accompany the single, is for the most part dominated by more measured and blues-based material. While "Take Care of Your Homework" generates a potent groove (and reads like a sequel to "Who's Making Love"), and "Hold on This Time" is a remarkably successful emulation of the Motown production style, for the most part, Who's Making Love suggests Taylor was most comfortable with slow, sorrowful laments such as "Can't Trust Your Neighbor" and "Poor Make Believer," and while these tunes lack the dancefloor drive of Taylor's uptempo hits, no one can deny he knows how to make the most of the dramatic sweep of a tale of love gone wrong, and his tales of lovers gone astray (and paying the price) carry a weight not unlike that of his earlier gospel period. Who's Making Love captures some of the high points of Taylor's career as a Southern soul man, and finds him nodding to his past and well as his future in his search for inspiration. [The CD was also released with bonus tracks.] ~ Mark Deming

Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks. A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down drum break that stutters and skids backwards and forwards over a Notorious BIG vocal sample and is easily the eeriest track on the album. The only light relief is provided by Too $hort's "Pimp Sh*t," a humorous foray into playa politics. The title track's perennially recognizable hi-hat and wah-wah guitar intro, interlocking horn/string ...

Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway ...

Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and "Giving Up." Admittedly, his duets with Flack are among ...

Fierce scratching, U.K. and U.S. hip-hop, and electro-flavored beats all figure into the turntable crew Scratch Perverts' entry into the Fabriclive series. Arguably the most fun disc in the risk-taking series, Fabriclive.22 goes from brash U.K. hip-hopper Skinnyman to introspective rockers Radiohead and ends with five tracks of fierce jungle. It's no small feat that the flow is seamless, but these crafty perverts go that extra mile and drop some of their own remixes into the whole shebang. The Ian Brown number is an official Scratch Perverts excursion, but many of the other tracks get messed up and funked up enough they could be labeled as such. Cuts like the Roots at their ...

Golden State Funk - Impossibly Rare Funk From The Bay
Golden State Funk - Impossibly Rare Funk From The Bay CD  (2007)

Who's Making Love CD music
CD $14.79
Is this truly impossibly rare Bay Area funk? Sure -- half of these 20 cuts hadn't even been released, a few others hadn't been issued until they surfaced on some other early-21st century CD compilations, and the others appeared on very rare, very obscure releases in the late '60s and early '70s. As with any compilation that goes deep into rarities of a certain genre, this isn't stuff you could seriously put on the same level as the best funk from the era, and it's often derivative of major artists in the style. In this case, you'll hear serious props given to Sly & the Family Stone, the psychedelic funk-era Temptations, and James Brown, among others. That doesn't mean, however, that there aren't a lot of good, fun cuts here -- more so, in fact, than there usually are on such specialized rarity anthologies. While "Poor Sad Child Pts. 1-2" by the Windjammers, for instance, is a total rip of the Norman Whitfield-produced Temptations, it's a really good rip -- something that really doesn't happen too often anytime in pop music when there seems to be obvious and deliberate imitation/emulation involved. Also nearly great are the Love Experience's "Are You Together for the New Day?," with its nonstop wah-wah guitar and urgent call-and-response vocals between the lead and backup singers; Martin Holmes & the Uptights' simmering, slightly Latin-influenced instrumental "Sweet Talk"; Wally Cox & the Natives' exuberantly silly nonsense vocal party tune "Zu Zu"; and Ramona King's similarly frivolous "Super Chicken." And Jimmy Bee's "Vida Blue, Pt. 1," cut in 1971 in honor of the Oakland Athletics pitching sensation, is a must for baseball novelty disc fans, boogying ...

With Amber Rubarth it's all in the detail. Refreshingly unique in her styling, Rubarth has built an eclectic collection of songs from the fun and frivolous to the raw and destructive - her voice knows no bounds where genre is concerned. But it's in her lyrics where the most satisfaction is found. Inspiredby the works of Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen, her musings on life are delightful in their innocence and have the capacity to appeal to the most diverse audience. It's this very trait that bodes for a very promising future in which Rubarth will continue to break moulds." - Joel Crane --- NME, Q, Mojo (UK)"I was attracted ...
