LITTLE KIX, the 2000 release from brit-pop act Mansun, is a passionate, disquieting album. With a sophisticated sound analogous to acts like the Verve and Radiohead, this 11 song catalogue includes " Comes As No Surprise," "Electric Man," and "Goodbye."
Mansun's Little Kix is an album of the joke being on them. Attack of the Grey Lantern brazenly screamed its melodies amidst the pomp and circumstance, Six showed that Marillion-like "concept" albums even had their place in the post-Brit-pop landscape, and on both attempts, the more Mansun seemed out of touch with the masses, the better off they were. Here, the band simply seems out of touch with themselves. As leadoff single "I Can Only Disappoint U" croons in with over-accented curls and turns, one notices that the band's characteristic over-production is turned down to outline the band's actual songwriting chops. Which is laudable. Yet, in "Soundtrack 4 2 Lovers" (spelled the New Edition way) or "Electric Man" (the most significant nod to Suede's "The Chemistry Between Us" in ages), a new, lovelorn Mansun is shown stripped of their highly divisive costuming of old -- and their bare bodies are ugly. It's this album's simpler approach that shows them naked and floppy without their previous new romantic/prog-rock garments to hide their failings. With oafish lyrics carrying these semi-tunes along like "Video games, we have lost our souls/Bulldozer head 'cos we're stoned," there's a feeling that Mansun is grasping toward just about anything new for a sense of perspective. Admittedly, the band's commendable, urgent rises of orchestration still remain, which is a strong selling point. It's the feeling of a mistaken step that feels the most damaging. With future work with Paul Oakenfold, one hopes that Little Kix will merely be seen as a pause between superior albums. Indeed, as in the George Michael clap-along "Until the Next Life," Draper sings: "We were always acting out some drama." If he is to be believed, it's a fine time for them to get out of intermission and to start making plans for some new kind of pageant play. ~ Dean Carlson

$11.39 I was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At the age of 2 my parents returned to their original home in Hartselle, Alabama. I spent most of my childhood there and developed a very strong interest in country music listening to the Grand Ole Opry and other country radio programs. At the age of 12 we again moved to Michigan. I have been here ever since. I started learning to play the year we moved back to Michigan and have played and sang country music since that time. In 1975 I enlisted in the US Air Force and spent 4 years in the service of my beloved country. I was stationed in Tampa, Florida for almost 2 years before being reassigned to Lakenheath AFB in England. While in England I met several guys that also loved to play country music and we formed a band. We played at the base Rod and Gun Club a lot to entertain the servicemen and women from the surrounding bases. We also played several local ...

| | Don Henderson Shorter By The Second CD (2007)
Little Kix music CDs
$15.19 Don Henderson is a guitarist/vocalist/songwriter from Huntsville, AL with one foot in the acoustic-rock/pop genre, and one foot in the solo acoustic instrumental style. His debut album "Shorter by the Second" consists of eighteen songs, evenly divided between those two styles. His songs cover territory ranging from post-college boredom and disappointment (“Happens to Everyone”, “Food Court”), to clever yet sincere celebrations of love (“Relax with Snacks”, “Blame the Altitude”), to smart-assed self-analysis that’ll leave you smiling (“What Do I Know”, “Psych Book”). Henderson is one of those rare songwriters who can play guitar as well as he writes—In fact, his guitar work alone makes the CD a worthwhile listen—Give a listen to his crisp, Knopfler-esque lead work woven throughout “Food Court”, his speedy yet soulful solo on “Five Second Rule”, or the growling, gut-punch of a solo on “Throwaways”, and hear for yourself. And that’s not even counting the second half of the album, which features solo acoustic instrumental performances ranging from the lightning-paced virtuosic melodies of “Loopydance” and “12/3/97” to the simple yet beautiful fingerstyle work featured in “Mary” and “October Perfection”.If you ask Henderson about his musical influences, you’ll probably want to pack a lunch. He can go on for hours if you let him: “I’m influenced in some way by just about everything I’ve ever heard. Every song rubs off on me a little, whether it’s a great song that makes me want to write something ...
