| | Bobby Hutcherson Wise One CD (2009)
Music For Relaxation
$15.05 Unlike Bobby Hutcherson's previous super mellow effort For Sentimental Reasons, this recording is charged with increased energy and vitality, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. Hutcherson plays the part of Coltrane's tenor and soprano sax with his vibraphone quite tastefully, while guitarist Anthony Wilson adds a new chordal dimension to the music far different than a woodwind instrument. Pianist Joe Gilman is perfectly matched with his bandmates, a supple, inventive, yet forceful musician who lends great depth to the background, or in tandem with the lead instruments. California drummer and longtime confrère of Hutcherson Eddie Marshall plays as well as ever, while bassist Glenn Richman is the much lesser known but able fifth wheel. The leader is as familiar as anyone with this music, being a survivor of the turbulent '60s jazz scene, where he was in the midst of helping change the music. Here he adds extraordinary taste and precision to these originals of Coltrane's, and standards the saxophonist made his own. Perhaps the most beautiful of all Coltrane compositions is ...

As British bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis extended the borders of rock & roll, John McLaughlin had seized the opportunity to do the same with jazz. The first stars of the jazz/rock fusion camp, the Mahavishnu Orchestra played sellout concerts, sold records in quantities previously unheard of by jazz musicians, and captured a crossover audience ...
| | George Winston Autumn CD (1980) Windham Hill 20th Anniversary Edition
Music For Relaxation
$8.89 Principally recorded on June 19-20, 1980. Includes liner notes by George Winston.
AUTUMN was superstar new age pianist George Winston's first album to sell more than 1,000,000 copies. Listening to these spare, emotionally rich pieces, it's easy to understand why. But it's also clear what sets Winston apart from the hordes of other new age piano soloists: an insistent--occasionally even jarring--gothic sensibility that informs his music.
Like many of his albums, AUTUMN found its inspiration in ...
| | In Order To Survive Peach Orchard CDs (1998)
Music For Relaxation
$17.15 William Parker/In Order To Survive: William Parker (bass); Rob Brown (alto saxophone); Cooper-Moore (piano); Susie Ibarra (drums).
THE PEACH ORCHARD is a vibrant live album from perhaps the most beloved free jazz group of the late '90s. It was at this time that bassist William Parker came into his own as a bandleader and composer. While the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra showcased Parker's vision for large ensemble sound, In Order To Survive displayed his equally strong small jazz combo concepts. In pieces like "Thot," "Three Clay Pots," and the group's theme "In Order to Survive (We Must Keep Hope Alive)," the group moves readily from highly addictive vamps and grooves to extended sections of free meter improvisation, presenting a living history of jazz in the process.
Alto saxophonist Rob Brown, fully featured throughout, is one of the most intensely inventive and expressive improvisers of the present day. ...

| | Gerry Mulligan Young Mulligan CDs (2003)
Music For Relaxation
$16.29 Gerry Mulligan rose to prominence in 1950 with his appearance on Miles Davis's revolutionary BIRTH OF THE COOL album, where his compositions, arrangements, and baritone saxophone work generated much acclaim. That appearance was the first highlight in a spectacular and varied career that lasted well into the '90s. Although Mulligan was a restless musician who developed steadily and could play in nearly any style, he is still most often associated with his early, "west coast" cool-jazz sound.
Much of that style is featured on YOUNG MULLIGAN, a double-disc set that spotlights his multiple talents. The first disc compiles some of Mulligan's best work as a sideman, including dates with Gene Krupa, Kai Winding, and the three tracks Mulligan penned for the BIRTH OF THE COOL sessions ("Jeru," "Venus de Milo," and "Rocker"). The second disc showcases the artist's work as a leader of various ensembles (including his original quintet with Chet Baker on trumpet), with plenty of his brilliant, laid-back sax work on display.
Mulligan was one of the most versatile figures in modern jazz. 41 tracks over two CDs that amply show what an innovator Mulligan was. Amongst the supporting cast are, Charlie Ventura, Miles Davis, Gene Krupa, & Chet Baker in legendary piano-less quartet. Includes 16 page booklet containing liner notes & photos. Slipcase. Proper. 2003.
Contains 41 tracks.
Includes liner notes by Joost Visser.
Personnel: Gerry Mulligan (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Kenny "Pancho" Hagood (vocals); Mike Triscari, Hy White, Bob Lesher, Joe Derise, Barry Galbraith (guitar); Danny Polo (clarinet, alto saxophone); Clint Neagley, Harry Terrill, Joe Soldo, Lee Konitz, Charlie Kennedy (alto saxophone); Buddy Wise, Jerry ...
