$9.99 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has ...

| | Donna Summer Live And More: Encore! CD (1999)
Club New York Vol. 2 music CDs
$7.59 A 1999 sequel to Donna Summer's 1978 smash, LIVE AND MORE: ENCORE was recorded during the resurgent dance-pop diva's 1998 world tour. The set list is pretty much what you would expect, featuring most of her biggest hits (the born-again Summer refuses to perform the orgasmic "Love To Love You Baby" anymore, however) with new arrangements jazzier and funkier than the chilly Eurodisco of the original studio creations.
As she's now in her 50s, Summer's ...

| | Mario CD (2002) Bonus Track; Japan
Club New York Vol. 2 album
$31.99 The front cover of young R&B upstart Mario's self-titled debut album tells a great deal of the story; the youngster doesn't look old enough to shave, but he's sporting that peach-fuzz moustache for all it's worth. Along those lines, these tracks find the youthful innocence of Mario's pliant voice stepping up to take on adult subjects amid some positively grown-up-sounding arrangements. Overseen in part by the seemingly indefatigable Clive Davis for his own hit-spinning J Records, the album boasts danceable, hook-laden production fully supporting Mario's engaging vocal style. While opening the album with a new, smoothed-out version of Biz Markie's quirky classic "Just a Friend" may be a questionable move, there's no doubting the chart-worthiness of MARIO as a whole.
When considering the abilities and potential of teen pop stars from any genre, a certain amount of cynicism is not only healthy, but practically essential. Yet if you indulge too deeply, you overlook performers like Mario, the Baltimore-born singer whose Top Ten debut still flew under a lot of people's radars in a year dominated by B2K, Bow Wow, and other pubescent urban artists. Mario's self-titled first album, however, offers doses of the real thing; its ...

Club New York Vol. 2 music CDs
$13.95 The sophomore solo effort from No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani capitalizes on the qualities that made her debut, LOVE ANGEL MUSIC BABY, a success, namely the hip-hop-infused club sound she laid down on that album's smash single "Hollerback Girl." As on LAMB, SWEET ESCAPE boasts production work from the Neptunes, among other talented trackmasters (including Akron and No Doubt member Tony Kanal).
In general, Stefani backs off the ...
