| | Hello Stranger: The Best Of Barbara Lewis CD (1994)
Universal Masters Collection
$9.29 Recorded between March 1962 and January 1968. Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
Barbara Lewis may not have been one of the toughest or funkiest singers to appear on the Atlantic Records roster, but her hits for the label define pop-soul at its best, especially the subtle but wonderfully sexy "Hello Stranger," one of the most seductive tunes to ever make its way to AM radio. "Baby, I'm Yours" and "Make Me Your Baby" were nearly as memorable, and if Lewis recorded numbers like "Puppy Love" and "My Heart Went Do Dat Da" a bit too often, she had the talent and the class to make something worthwhile of even the silliest material (and as it happens, she also wrote the latter two songs, as well as the sublime "Hello Stranger"). In 1994, Rhino Records released a definitive single-disc collection of Lewis' recordings for Atlantic, Hello Stranger: The Best of Barbara Lewis, and Rhino's British branch has recycled this compilation as part of their Platinum Collection series of soul hits ...

| | Very Best Of Sheryl Crow CD (2003)
Universal Masters Collection
$10.39 One of those rare talents who bucked the jinx of winning the Best New Artist Grammy (which she snagged in 1995), Sheryl Crow accrued an impressive canon over the span of a decade. Starting with this Missouri native's twangy, Rickie Lee Jones-flavored 1993 smash "All I Wanna Do," Crow has made her mark with songs such as the forward-looking "Every Day Is a Winding Road," the pleading ballad "Strong Enough," and the Beach Boys-flavored summer anthem "Soak Up the Sun."
This former in-demand session musician's talents also found her going down a country path by way of a classic duet with Kid Rock on the ballad "Picture," which rubs shoulders with the wonderfully atmospheric "Home" and the put-up-or-shut-up sentiment of the life-loving "If It Makes You Happy." Fans who are looking for new material get rewarded with two versions of Cat Stevens' "The First Cut Is the Deepest," one with a vintage Rod Stewart-like arrangement and a country version, featuring steel guitar. Also included is "Light in Your Eyes," ...
| | Golden Age Of American Rock 'N Roll CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Universal Masters Collection
$17.09 Name any big rock & roll novelty hit from the mid-'50s to the mid-'60s, the sillier the better, and the odds are it's on this 30-song compilation. As just a sample of the big hits here, this has the Ran-Dells' "Martian Hop"; Sheb Wooley's "The Purple People Eater"; David Seville's "Witch Doctor"; the Playmates' "Beep Beep"; Barry Mann's "Who Put the Bomp (In the Bomp Bomp Bomp)"; Gene Simmons' "Haunted House"; the Detergents' "Leader of the Pack" satire "Leader of the Laundromat" (probably the funniest thing here); and, closing the disc, Napoleon XIV's legendarily grating "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haa!" Naturally, some ...
