| | Arturo Sandoval Hot House CD (1998)
City Never Sleeps CD music
$13.75 HOT HOUSE won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Performance.
The man has trumpeted with Cuba's Modern Music Orchestra and Diz' United Nations band. He'll quote a Tadd Dameron tune in the middle of a mambo. He flugelhorns over a tune he calls, "Funky Cha-Cha." Do the world a favor and listen to Arturo Sandoval and his band as they blaze through this assembly of jazzed Cuban dance rhythms. From minor ballad to up-tempo hip shaker, this music feels great.
Paying tribute to his idol Diz, Sandoval and the gang swing fiercely on Tadd Dameron's "Hot House." Sometimes a rather angular tune, Chip McNeill ...
| | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
City Never Sleeps music CDs
$13.09 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. ...

| | Zachary Breaux Uptown Groove CD (1997)
City Never Sleeps songs
$8.79 Guitarist Zachary Breaux, who tragically died just a few months after recording this CD (his debut), was a potentially great guitarist with a style coming from George Benson. In fact, his solos are generally more memorable than the purposely commercial material on this set, which largely consists of melodic, jazzy funk jams, usually with rather basic electronic rhythms. The cover versions of "All Blues" (which is given simplified ...

| | Miles Davis Super Hits CD (2001)
City Never Sleeps songs
$6.99 A well-sequenced set of eight midtempo pieces recorded by various incarnations of Miles Davis groups for Columbia Records between 1956 and 1984, this compilation is a wonderful listen but selections like "Summertime" and "Bye Bye Blackbird," for instance, really ought to be heard in their original settings to be truly appreciated. ~ Steve Leggett
This greatest-hits "steel box" collection of Miles Davis tracks from his long tenure with Columbia Records is so named because that's what it comes encased in -- a generic steel box. The music is culled from the earliest Miles period at the label, through the Kind of Blue and Gil Evans collaborative periods and the last quintet with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, and Ron Carter, and then his final years at the label on the soulful cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." ~ Thom Jurek

| | Loggins & Messina Sittin' In/Loggins And Messina CDs (1997) (Import) United Kingdom
City Never Sleeps album
$18.49 Originally released as three separate albums, SITTIN' IN, LOGGINS AND MESSINA and FULL SAIL.
Between 1972 and 1973, Loggins And Messina were on a roll. They released a trio of hugely successful records, culminating in the platinum FULL SAIL, which became the group's biggest seller. Much of the group's most memorable work was born of this first burst of creativity. After FULL SAIL, their records began to show the strain of success, which hastened their eventual break-up.
The wide stylistic territory covered in these songs embodies the many musical styles that Loggins And Messina seemed to effortlessly combine into their work. Over their six-album career, they returned to the '50s-style bubblegum of "Your Mama Don't Dance" and "My Music," as well as the aching balladry of "Danny's Song." They would also go further in the direction of the sophisticated jazz-pop of "Angry Eyes." Elsewhere, the Calypso-flavored ...
