| | Shocking Blue Scorpio's Dance CD - Import Shocking Blue Discography of CDs
This album by Belgian rock group Shocking Blue, popular in the late 1960s and early '70s, features 14 tracks.
Shocking Blue's second album was partly recorded in New York and continues the band's exploration of Americana and country music, although its style is firmly rooted in rock. "Alaska Country" is one of the most obvious references to America, but "Sally Was a Good Old Girl" is a cover of an early-'60s country hit by songwriter Hank Cochran; Shocking Blue's rendition chugs along in a rock groove that reveals the source of its material with a touch of banjo. As always, the focal point is the inimitable voice of Mariska Veres, but songwriter/guitarist Robby VanLeeuwen shows no sign of a sophomore slump. There isn't an obvious hit single candidate like the previous album's "Venus," but Scorpio's Dance makes up for it with solid consistency. "Daemon Lover" is moody and mesmerizing, and the title track is a spaghetti western soundtrack in search of a film (the cover photo, appropriately enough, was shot in a cactus field). "I Love Voodoo Music" is colored with bongos and jungle sound effects, while "Water Boy" sees the return of VanLeeuwen's sitar. It's a diverse collection of songs that reveals the group's artistic growth but, in America at least, saw no chart action. ~ Greg Adams
2002 reissue of the Dutch rock act's 1969 album includes four bonus tracks, 'Send Me A Postcard', 'Mighty Joe', 'Hello Darkness' & 'Pickin' Tomatoes'.

While there aren't really any hidden gems here, the performances and material are uniformly strong and listenable. ~ Steve Huey

| | Scarlet Pimpernel CD (1998)
Scorpio's Dance songs
$9.29 In 1992, when it had its first recording, Frank Wildhorn and Nan Knighton's The Scarlet Pimpernel was a concept album vaguely based on the novels of Baroness Oczy, but without a real story and largely constructed as a star vehicle for Linda Eder. Nearly six years later, the cast album of the Broadway show (with a libretto by Knighton) that opened November 9, 1997, is a vast improvement. Six of the 15 vocal numbers have been cut and eight added, providing a much-needed balance of material by beefing up the parts of the villain and the Scarlet Pimpernel himself. The soft rock arrangements have been jettisoned, and there is more of the Les Miserables-like, convincingly theatrical style of original songs such as "Into the Fire" and "The Creation of Man." At the same time, the better ballads from the original, "You Are My Home" and "When I Look at You," have been retained. The singers are up to Wildhorn's rangy demands, even if Christine Andreas is inevitably less distinctive than Eder. The Scarlet Pimpernel still isn't a great work of music or theater, but now it's a legitimate, well-performed musical theater work. (In the fall of 1998, the Broadway production of The Scarlet Pimpernel was extensively revised, so this album may no longer represent it.) ~ William Ruhlmann
