| | Metalwood 3 CD - Import Metalwood Discography of CDs
Metalwood, the Canadian jazz-funk foursome, makes some departures on their third record, incorporating drum'n'bass and hip-hop elements on "Isthmus of Drum," "Phone Home" (which sounds a bit like Portishead), and "Metalcode" (a bonus remix). Keyboardist Brad Turner turns to acoustic piano for the first time on a Metalwood disc, adding a bright sheen to the washy interlude "Moonrocks" and the elegant "Will I Dream?" and "Mr. Willis." The band also cooks in their customary way on the kinetic groove tunes "Bijou," "Them," and "Bombergirl." Turner and bassist Chris Tarry remain the band's chief composers, but as on previous albums, spontaneous in-studio collaborations take up about a quarter of the program. Highlights among the structured tunes include Tarry's snarling "Monday Night Meltdown" and Turner's anthemic "Time Being." ~ David R. Adler

Metalwood 3 album
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly ...

Metalwood 3 songs
$6.25 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its ...
| | Very Best Of Bert Kaempfert CD (1995)
Metalwood 3 album
$13.69 Recorded between 1960 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.
Digitally remastered by Eliot Goshman (1995, Taragon Studios, Deer Park, New York).
Beginning with Louis Armstrong, through Harry James and Bobby Hackett of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, the trumpet was once a king in pop music. This was true even in '60s-era easy listening, as demonstrated by the success of Al Hirt, Herb Alpert, and the ultra-shrewd German musician Bert Kaempfert, who probably was as responsible as anyone else in rehabilitating Germany's post-war world image. The Taragon label is re-releasing all ...

Metalwood 3 songs
$12.49 Recorded between 1962 and 1997. Includes liner notes by Diana Krall and Bob Blumenthal.
Part of the fine Verve series of compilations where popular jazz performers pick artists that influenced their work and select their favorite tracks. Here singer/pianist Diana Krall explores the music of singer/pianist Shirley Horn. Most of these tracks span the decade of Horn's Verve recordings, and feature her super tight trio.
Horn's work has always been uniformly excellent; every track on this sampler of her music is a knockout. She's a master of the romantic jazz ballad. Her sultry and smoky vocals are intimate and conversational, and she uses odd-metered timing and silences to make an emotional point, rather than vocal acrobatics. Her masterly chord cluster piano style is used to punctuate her every vocal phrase. Included here are such Horn classics as the ballads "Summer (Estate)" and "A Time For Love," both with Johnny Mandel's gorgeous string arrangements, and swinging versions of "Hard Hearted Hannah, the Vamp ...
| | Screaming Headless Torsos 1995 CD (2002)
Metalwood 3 album
$13.75 This is a 2002 reissue of the original CD by guitar hero David "Fuze" Fiuczynski's Screaming Headless Torsos quintet. Along with two previously unissued tracks (Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" and George Harrison's "Something), this outing provides an early glimpse of one of the most powerful jazz-rock units to emerge in quite some time. On the other hand, perhaps the brand of music heard here could be akin to shock therapy treatment. Vocalist Dean Bowman adds a lot of character to this quintet as he raps, croons, and scats atop an assortment of high-octane pieces, consisting of funk motifs, jazzy progressions, and tricky time signatures. Dynamics abound, partly due to the rhythm section's razor-sharp precision and seemingly impossible technical ...
