| Dickens Christmas Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Xmas Past This CD is unique in that it brings forth the real Xmas sounds not the overly commercialized CD's we see on the supermarket shelves. There are some beautiful banjo arrangements on this CD. Submitted by lewisscolby (Tempe, AZ, 85283) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great It's one of my favorite Christmas cd's. It makes me think of a good, old-fashioned country Christmas with good friends, good food, and a party atmosphere. Submitted by Christine (Kingston, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Old-Timey Christmas sounds For those of us who like the sounds of a VERY old-time Christmas, this CD is a "must-have". Ed Sweeney is a banjo master, and his friends are equally capable on their respective instruments. The result is a fabulous, "English-Dickens"-like light-hearted sound that makes the Christmas season even more joyous than it is. Dickens Christmas album
$21.49 The nearly 100 songs collected on this two-disc set aren't necessarily for children (some of them, like the dark "When the Train Comes Along," have death as a theme, and others, like "What Did You Have for Supper," are floating snippets from large and tragic British ballads), and siblings Peggy and Mike Seeger certainly don't sing them the way Mr. Rogers would in his neighborhood, preferring instead to deliver the songs in the rough and ragged manner in which they were probably sung in the first place in the Appalachians and elsewhere, which makes American Folksongs for Children as much a lesson in history and sociology as anything else. It was also obviously a labor of love, since the songs selected are all drawn from the book by the same title originally published by Peggy and Mike's mother, Ruth Crawford Seeger, in 1948. Most of the songs are ...

Dickens Christmas CD music
$8.99 Music composed by Gene De Paul. Lyrics written by Johnny Mercer.
Songwriter Johnny Mercer did not have much luck writing for Broadway, but the exception was Lil' Abner, based on the satiric Al Capp comic strip about the rural residents of Dogpatch. Mercer wrote the song lyrics to music by Gene DePaul, with whom he had worked on the movie musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. After the show opened on November 15, 1956, it became the only stage work with which Mercer was associated to turn a profit, running 693 performances. Actually, the score isn't as strong as that for one of Mercer's flops, St. Louis Woman, but it is appropriate to the subject matter. The songs "Jubilation T. Cornpone," "The Country's in the Very Best of Hands," and "Progress Is the Root of All Evil" wittily capture Capp's sense of humor and dim view of politics. There are also some attractive romantic ballads, notably "Namely You" and "Love in a Home," both of which became minor hits. Edith "Edie" Adams and Stubby Kaye lead a cast of unknowns who give their all to ...
