Additional personnel includes: Mike Smith (saxophone); Dominic Glover (trumpet); Nicol D. Thomson (trombone); Ingo Vauk (programming). Soft Cell's fourth studio album was released a full 18 years after the duo's third, This Last Night in Sodom (1984). During those 18 years, both Marc Almond and Dave Ball pursued solo careers to huge success, and occasionally worked together on albums (Marc Almond's wonderful 1990 album, Enchanted) and remix singles. But here, the two are together in full force. Almond's lyrics are among the best he has ever written, especially on the tragic "Whatever It Takes," which seems to be the sequel to their debut single, "Fun City," revisiting the same character 25 years later. It all comes together with brilliant writing and Ball's atmospheric and swelling arrangement of the eerie music. And the music has grown; sure, it sounds like an updated Soft Cell, but the '80s are nowhere in sight. Wisely, this is not a "retro" album with re-recordings of the duo's big hits, but rather a more mature Soft Cell. Overall, the album has a dark, semi-political tone reflecting the late '90s and early '00s. While it is dark, it is also captivating and accessible. Almond's voice is strong and emotive, living and breathing his stories and observations. Autobiographical? Perhaps, but in the end it does not ...

12 INCHES OF SNOW is a primo dancehall throwdown, combining as it does the best elements of Jamaican dub and reggae with the street smart beats and poetry of American hip-hop. Snow's raps and riddims are as distinctive as his expatriate upbringing in Toronto, Canada, and on the opening "Runway" and the CD bonus track "50 Ways" his jittery rhymes jump trip in and out of the mix like a percussion instrument, recalling the triplet-inflected ...
Something Better Change
D O A Something Better Change CD  (1980)

Fragile songs
CD $11.59  Audio Samples
About time! For nearly two decades since they went out of print, the first two classic punk DOA LPs were bowdlerized into Bloodied But Unbowed, and then, to address the numerous songs regrettably removed in the process, the Polish import (!) non-LP Greatest Shits appeared. Yet, when one considers how revolutionary and yet how distinct from each other those two LPs were, this state of affairs just made no sense. In an era when so few North American punk greats ever made an actual LP, how could two such crucial ones remain so unavailable for so long? Thankfully, here's the first of them, in its natural, restored state, just as it appeared in 1980 -- and how glorious it remains! The product of two years of solid gigging in their native Vancouver, by the hottest punk rock band the West Coast ever produced this side of the much different Weirdos and Avengers, Something Better Change features a trio so molten, they didn't even manage to get it all down in the studio. And yet it still is an absolutely awesome record. So heavy with chops it nearly leaks, soaring like the best Clash/Pistols/S.L.F. riffs filtered through an American anvil power even those greats couldn't approach. On the faster cuts, DOA just turn the aggression up several notches. And on the slower cuts they prove themselves as much a strong, fiery, spit-a-flyin' rock & roll band as they are a punk one. ...
Night For Baku
Djam Karet Night For Baku CD  (2003)

Fragile album
CD $15.39  5 stars Audio Samples
All the clichés ever used about instrumental prog rock at its best would be appropriate here -- "soaring," "anthemic," "powerful," "gorgeous," "cosmic," and so on. In truth, the CD itself builds on such clichés, but that's good news for anyone who wants to revisit the glory days of the genre -- or find out why this type of music still has so many fans. The veteran Djam Karet quartet (here bolstered by a second bassist) is blessed with two superb electric guitarists who also double on analog and digital synths, theremin, and samplers and a percussionist who also doubles on synths. Their music has a sweeping, epic sound very much in the tradition of early King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer (minus the vocals). Djam Karet has been together for a rather remarkable 20 years with the same personnel, while remaining essentially an underground, West Coast phenomenon. Early on, they were essentially a guitar-driven electric jam band in the mode of Ozric Tentacles or even a stripped-down Grateful Dead, but they have steadily evolved and grown over the years. On this CD, the group avoids jam-band tedium by breaking most of the nine tracks into sections, either alternating between fast and slow movements, or introducing a new melodic theme in the middle of a piece before eventually returning to the original melody or riff. One section may feature a particular guitar style or sound, and the next may be centered around a Moog or other contrasting synth ...

Brooklyn-based label Nature Sounds, wanting to impress the public with its list of 2006 releases, issued the sampler Natural Selection to highlight some its most promising upcoming albums. This means, basically, a lot of Wu-Tang-inspired New York hip-hop (from the source itself: Masta Killa, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Mathematics, and Killah Priest are all included here), plus two rather uninspiring cuts from Los Angeles supergroup Strong Arm Steady. The best outlook for the year probably comes from Masta Killa, whose song "Ringing Bells," from his 2006 sophomore album, Made in Brooklyn, has the best production and most interesting beat of all of the tracks, and the MC himself has quick, smooth rhymes and a nice flow. "Stick 'Em Up," by Problemz, Psycho Les, and Al Tariq, despite its use of the hip-hop platitude "put your hands in the air," is a good song, too, meandering around the story of a robbery, a theme ...
