Lock up your daughters and little sisters, the photogenic gentlemen of 98 Degrees are on the prowl once more. In the wake of the late-'90s Latin pop explosion, one can hardly fault the quartet for opening REVELATION with the Latin-flavored "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)," and for four guys from Ohio, they pull it off pretty convincingly. From there on, however, the group doesn't let stylistic experimentation get in the way of their main goal, which of course, is traveling straight into the hearts of young girls worldwide. With their achingly romantic crooning, and their poignant, cinematic arrangements replete with limpid piano, gentle rhythmic syncopation and cooing harmonies, they should have little trouble achieving their goal. Sure, REVELATION has its uptempo, danceable moments, such as the funky "Dizzy" and the aforementioned opening cut, but for the most part, unabashed romanticism is the order of the day here.

Revelation album
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays ...

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Revelation music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." ...

| | Joss Stone Colour Me Free! CD (2009) Import
Revelation CD music
$30.38 The "free" in the title to Joss Stone's fourth album apparently refers to the neo-singer breaking free from the shackles of her major label, EMI, who apparently have not let Joss be Joss. That this constricting argument happens to be the exact same story line Stone used for 2007's Introducing Joss Stone, the splashy diva power trip meant to unveil the "real" singer, is conveniently forgotten, as is the modern R&B of that makeover, with Joss returning to all the retro-soul of her first two records. The one lingering element of Introducing is a propensity for melisma-laden oversinging, a tic that stands out in the warmer, funkier settings of Colour Me Free! Still, her raw vocal skills remain impressive, as does her taste in soul, and this does beat with a messy human heart. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Gary Stewart Brand New CD (1988)
Revelation music CDs
$10.69 After a six-year break, Gary Stewart returned to recording for the Hightone label in Oakland, CA. Other than rocking a bit harder -- courtesy of guitar players Dale Sellers on lead and Allman Brother Warren Haynes on slide -- Stewart is not a shadow of his former self, but himself, period: namely, a bad-assed honky tonk singer/songwriter who delivers drinking songs better than anyone except Merle Haggard. And like the days of yore when albums like Out of Hand, Your Place or Mine, and Gary were released on RCA, Brand New is a collection of bar-slammin' good-time rowdy honky tonk songs and broken, screwed-up love songs seen from the bottom of a glass. "Brand New Whiskey" feels like a Stewart rewrite of Guy Clark's "Take Me to a Barroom," and is every bit as good; "I Owe It All to My Heart" is a sad country song in the best sense of the word. "Lucretia" is a rocker with echoes of Derek & the Dominos' "Layla," done pub-style. ...

| | Fats Domino Jukebox: 20 Greatest Hits The Way You Originally Heard Them CD (2002)
Revelation album
$8.39 Recorded in New Orleans, Louisiana between 1950 & 1961. Includes liner notes by John Broven.
Fats Domino was one of the brightest lights of the New Orleans R&B scene of the early 1950s and one of the key progenitors of rock & roll. His music is fun, rollicking, and upbeat, but it's the strength of his tunes that make the music timeless. FATS DOMINO JUKEBOX contains 20 of the big man's original classics, every one a vintage rock-&-roll gem. In addition to signature songs like "Ain't That a Shame" and "Blueberry ...
