REENCONTRO is a 2000 release by MPB singer Leila Pinheiro, featuring "Acaso" and "E."
Leila Pinheiro is an artist who has established her reputation as a singer of delicate bossas and intensely romantic but tasty style. With the market hardships associated with these preferences, she has opting for introducing contemporary pop elements in her renditions for songs of established composers as a way of preserving her authenticity while appealing to a broader audience. This is the synthesis of Reencontro, dedicated to the important works of Gonzaguinha and Ivan Lins. Mostly delicate ballads and slow tunes are on the release, which also has the swinging sambas "É" and "Desenredo" as its most energetic tunes. Ivan Lins participates in "Iluminados." Reencontro (Meeting Again) can be interpreted as an encounter of excellent MPB works with the new directions of contemporary pop music without compromising quality in favor of commercialism. ~ Alvaro Neder

The first half of CLOSER is made up of upbeat Latin-funk tunes. This is best exemplified by the sleek montuno "Tin Tin Deo." Later in the disc, Sanborn explores some mellower, darker ballads, with the highlight being "You Must Believe in Spring." On this tune, Sanborn features the delicate guitar work of Russell Malone and the subtle organ comping of Larry Goldings. The most fascinating track on CLOSER, however, is Abdullah Ibrahim's "Capetown Fringe," a song that centers itself on South African rhythms and a wanderlust-evoking melody. On this selection, Gil Goldstein's accordion gives the song a wonderful quirkiness, which provides an excellent counterpoint to the album's more straight-ahead tunes.

The veteran blue-eyed soul singer has been busy since 1995 (the year he released his last literal pop album, Soul Survivor), recording albums of standards along with his Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin-styled soundtrack work and counting the royalties from the 100 or so covers or samples of his best-known hit, "What You Won't Do for Love" -- so preoccupied, in fact, that's it's been easy to forget just how skilled he is at delivering easygoing romantic pop, whether it's funky and percussive (as on the brassy, bouncy "Call Me Up"), perfect for Latin salsa dancing (the balmy "Donna"), or simply laid-back and moonlit (the title track). Caldwell is at the top of his charming game on this modern adult contemporary classic, not mining any truly original territory lyrically but wringing every last emotion out of his originals (the power ballads "Extra Mile" and "Crazy for Your Love" are standouts) and a handful of well-chosen covers. None of his classic pop choices come close to his renditions of "Beyond the Sea" or "Luck Be a Lady," but he finds all the passion necessary on a loping take of "Sukiyaki (Forever)" (he provides sweet new English lyrics), the bright samba arrangement of "Our Day Will Come," and the masterfully soulful "Where Is the Love," which finds him perfectly paired with Deniece Williams. Growing up in Toronto during the folk music heyday of the sixties and seventies gave Tom the opportunity to experience first hand some of folk music's true legends. Experiences that would have such a great impact on his musical direction.
