Heavy metal group, Bathory, originally released BLOOD FIRE DEATH in 1988.
Possibly the first true example of what is commonly called Viking metal, 1988's Blood Fire Death inaugurated an incredibly prolific period in Bathory's history -- so prolific and creative, in fact, that an entire album's worth of material recorded at this time would be shelved for years before eventually finding room for release as 1996's Blood on Ice. Featuring dramatic orchestral arrangements backing horrific banshee cries and galloping battalions of doom and destruction, "Oden's Ride Over Nordland" was as powerful an instrumental mood setter as has ever introduced a heavy metal album. It also boasted something never before heard on a Bathory LP: high audio fidelity, for Blood Fire Death was indeed the group's first to qualify as a professional-sounding recording. The second shock arrived when Quorthon employed a clean singing style (as opposed to his previously preeminent death croak) on the remarkable epic "A Fine Day to Die," whose complex arrangements and wide-ranging use of melody are also far more daring and adventurous than all his previous works. And what may have seemed accidental with the previous year's exceptional Under the Sign of the Black Mark was unquestionably confirmed here: This was the sound of modern black metal taking shape before fans' very eyes. Unfortunately, the album's jaw-dropping initial offensive isn't always maintained throughout, with simplistic thrashers like "For All Those Who Died" and "Holocaust" harking back to the band's crude early days, but failing to deliver with quite as much power and conviction. On the other hand, outstanding songs like the aforementioned "Fine Day to Die," the deliriously heavy "The Golden Walls of Heaven," the multi-paced "Dies Irae," and, most notably, the lengthy title track (containing acoustic guitars and the whole kitchen sink) certainly qualify among the best things Bathory had ever recorded thus far. Simply put, Blood Fire Death's lasting legacy of influence cannot be underestimated, and its courageous experiments set the stage for what many consider Bathory's finest hour, the magnificent Hammerheart. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Great Quorton!!!! Masterpiece of the death world metal. Extraordinary. Negative point just for the absence of the original picture of LP where all the components are seizing swords in a forest.

This review is partially to offset the 4-star review the other guy gave, just due to the cover.
The other reason is to make clear that this is the album that started all the epic heavy/black/death metal that we know today. The two earlier Bathory albums were definitely the blueprint (or blackprint?) for black metal in general. However, they were much more simple and straightforward brutality, and were only stepping stones to the more complex evolution of Scandinavian extreme metal that would soon follow and spawn wonderful bands like Arcturus, Dissection, Enslaved, Marduk, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Mayhem, Burzum, Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Immortal, Tiamat, Katatonia, Opeth, Siebenburgen, Moonspell, My Dying Bride, Naglfar, Novembre, Orphaned Land, Satyricon, Sentenced, Summoning, Ulver............

Bathory at it's finest and very early playing.
The beat of the drum and guitar at the moments they are played make for a hellish perfection of death viking metal. This is a definate must for a person just getting into the Bathory scene. Just as good as Hammerheart!

Bon Jovi's sophomore release found the New Jersey group continuing with its engaging mix of hard rock dynamics and blatant pop-metal overtones, and primed the pump for the coming popular explosion of Slippery When Wet. Ever since the keyboard call to arms of the breakthrough "Runaway," Bon Jovi had understood that real success lay in a billowing smoke, soft-focus derivation of true metal, where Journey-style synthesizers and soft rock chorus vocals were the name of the game. To that end, 7800ø Fahrenheit tempered its black-leather rock & roll with a rudimentary form of the sound that would make Bon Jovi superstars. They puffed out their chests for the groupie-groping, Mötley Crüe-style catcalls of "In and Out of Love" and made sure "King of the Mountain" rumbled with boys-night-out bravado. But they seemed much more comfortable with the twittering ballad "Silent Night" or "Price of Love," where arena-ready riffing met smoke machine keys and vocal trills.
