Un Paradis/Un Enfer
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on ...

| | Pat Boone Hits Of The 60'S CD (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
Un Paradis/Un Enfer
$9.25 Out of the 30 selections contained on this three-disc set from Madacy, only one is an original recording. Every other track is an inferior take on the most popular version, almost always with disastrous results -- borderline karaoke, tinny electronic arrangements, poor sound quality (or any combination of the three). The original version of the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack" is here, but that hardly justifies the purchase. You could hear these versions at a low volume in a wind tunnel and know that they're not the originals you'd like to add to your collection. It's that bad, so steer clear. ~ Andy Kellman
Hits of the 60s doesn't compile Pat Boone's hits of the '60s, but rather his versions of '60s hits. Boone's renditions were recorded between 1963 and 1965, and include his takes on the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "Yesterday," the Rolling Stones' "As Tears Go By," and Chuck Berry's "Memphis" and "Sweet Little Sixteen." More interesting are his pop-rock reprise of the Rooftop Singers' "Walk Right In" and his double-tracked vocal version of "Our Day Will Come" set to a Bo Diddley beat. Boone's versatility and utter lack of posturing prevents these recordings from being an embarrassment, but clearly some of this material isn't as well-suited to him as it could be. True fans will be excited to have these mid-'60s performances on CD, as they make their first appearance on this import; casual listeners are advised to stick to a conventional best-of package. ~ Greg Adams
Hits of the Sixties is a collection of 30 popular songs from the '50s and '60s. Although there are definitely some songs added to pad the collection, this is mostly made up of very familiar pop songs from the era. What this collection features the most are excellent songs from female pop stars of the era. Betty Everett, the Shangri-Las, the Crystals, Mary Wells, and others add the sweet, melodic sounds of the girl group movement. On the other end of the spectrum, there are some wonderful pop songs from the Turtles, the Soul Survivors, the Vogues, and Del Shannon to represent the male perspective. While many CDs of this kind are known for having subpar sound, this actually has great sound, with no tracks being blatantly louder than the others and no annoying hissing. For fans of this time in music, this is a very enjoyable collection of classic pop. ~ Bradley Torreano

| | AK1200 At Close Range: Mix CD CD (2003)
Un Paradis/Un Enfer
$12.59 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by AK1200.
No less an authority than Dieselboy has called the Florida-based DJ AK1200 "the foundation of the American drum'n'bass scene," and while that may sound just a bit over-the-top to anyone who can name more than five or six American junglists from memory, there's no question that AK1200 is responsible for some of the most captivating music in a genre that is too often formulaic and, a decade after its arrival on the U.K. scene, distressingly stagnant. At Close Range doesn't exactly break new ground, and at its least compelling it demonstrates the weaknesses inherent in the genre: a tendency toward chilly, antiseptic atmospheres, and a certain textural shallowness. But at its best, this album showcases some talent that is well deserving of wider recognition, such as Pawthang, whose jittery masterpiece "Epilogue VIP" showcases the smooth vocal ...

| | Candido Camero Inolvidable CD (2004) (Import) SACD Hybrid
Un Paradis/Un Enfer
$18.95 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
INOLVIDABLE is a collaboration between two old friends, who just happen to be legendary figures in Afro-Cuban jazz. The project was spearheaded by conguero Candido Camero, who lured vocalist Graciela out of retirement for the session. One of the essential artists of the genre, Graciela was the lead vocalist for Machito and his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra for the duration of the group's greatest popularity (from the 1940s to the '70s). Candido's alternately subtle and raucous rhythms on his triple congas have defined numerous bands, and here he leads a crack ensemble of piano, violin, bass, flute, tres, and additional percussionists and backing vocalists.
Though both artists were in their 80s at the time of recording, this set of classic Cubop is imbued with a sense of youthful vitality and ease, with percolating polyrhythms intersecting jazzy instrumental passages. Though Graciela's pipes have weathered considerably, she still sings with the assurance of a master, and sounds especially fine on slower tunes, particularly ...
