| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Very Best CD music
$14.38 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to ...

Very Best album
$10.49 A HARD DAY'S NIGHT presents a fictionalized day in the life of the Beatles as they give a performance on a live television show. Filmed just a month after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, this film--the Beatles' first--introduces us to the unique personalities of each member of the band. The film opens with the Fab Four boarding a train mobbed with adoring young fans (mostly ...

Very Best album
$27.95 View from the Ground brought America back into the Top Ten with the exquisite "You Can Do Magic," one of the best soft rock anthems of the early '80s. It was an unexpected but welcome comeback for the group, and it seemed like America could continue to spin out hits with its sequel, 1983's Your Move. After the slight leadoff song, "My Kinda Woman," things pick up with the gentle Californian breeze of "She's a Runaway," and "The Border" (which became a minor Top 40 hit) is good enough to rank among the best of the group's latter-day material, although other songs on the album lack spark. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
View From the Ground brought America back into the Top Ten with the exquisite "You Can Do Magic," one of the best soft rock anthems of the early '80s. It was an unexpected but welcome comeback for the group, and it seemed like they could continue to spin out hits with its sequel, 1983's Your Move. That didn't turn out to be the case. Your Move feels wrong from the start, with its stiff drum-machine beats, synthesizers, and extremely slight song, "My Kinda Woman." Things pick up a little bit with the gentle, Californian breeze of "She's a Runaway," but that turns out to be an ...
| | Modey Lemon Thunder + Lightning CD (2003)
Very Best CD music
$13.89 Modey Lemon offer scabrous, punky hard rock on their second album, driven by elemental riffs that owe much to the early-'70s proto-punk school. It's the kind of thing that's been done by many other bands, of course, but Modey Lemon are fairly good at it, with Phil Boyd's hoarse-but-youthful vocals imparting a knowing cool as they ride on top of pummeling rhythms. Too, they have a much better sense of dynamics than many another groups following similar paths, particular in Boyd's use of some skin-crawling electronic textures to add depth to the dominant drums and guitars. Lyrically, this covers much of the stuff that seems to go with the territory in this sort of thing: dread, on-your-toes lookouts for survival, and a compulsive attraction to predatory sex ("I'd rather be your enemy than to be nothing at all" they proclaim in the title track), with some ghoulish ...

| | Papa Doo Run Run On The Beach Live! CD (2004)
Very Best album
$17.69 Formed in 1965, the now legendary California band, PAPA DOO RUN RUN, quickly discovered their forte - they could sound just like the Beach Boys! That sound led them to Jan & Dean, and from 1976-80 Papa toured North America as opening act and back-up band with the duo. In 1980, Papa graduated from J&D to the Beach Boys, and toured and recorded with that band throughout the next 2 decades. The group also had an unprecedented ...
| | Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Very Best CD music
$6.79 Boz Scaggs's 1976 breakthrough, SILK DEGREES, was not only his biggest-selling album, it was also one of his best. Here Scaggs collaborated with keyboardist and bandleader David Paich, who would soon form the hugely successful band Toto with this record's drummer, Jeff Porcaro. In Paich, Scaggs found a foil who added just enough pop gloss to make his blues- and R&B-tinged material palatable to the masses. Crucially, though, the pair keeps Scaggs's remarkable voice at the ...
