When they formed the band in London, the members of the Slits couldn't even tune their own instruments, but two years later, in 1979, they recorded this seriously strange and upbeat album, firmly planting a flag in the skull of punk for all of womankind. Under the producing wing of reggae giant Dennis Bovell, CUT rocks, rips, roots under, and rides over ska and punk cliches with unfettered glee and heavy bass.
The sexy yowling on "Shoplifting" and "So Tough" shows how vocalist Ari Up connects Courtney Love, Kathleen Hanna, Bjork, and Kim Gordon on the female-singer family tree. Tracks like "Typical Girls" and "Ping Pong Affair" sprawl through complex sagas of drug addiction, sexual violence, forbidden love, and feminist declarations, all without losing either intellect or a goofy sense of humor. CUT obviously influenced everyone from 1980s New Wavers like Cyndi Lauper, the B-52's, and the Go-Go's to alt-rockers like Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's a landmark record, heavy with historical value, but also light with extreme fun. (Note: This reissue also includes two bonus tracks--a cover of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and an alternate version of "Love Und Romance," entitled "Liebe And Romanze.")
The Original Punk Girl (mostly) Band, Cut Stands As One of The Most Endearing Testaments To The Diy Philosophy. The Slits Were Raw and Raucous and Possessed The Spirit of Creativity That Was Never Equalled Amongst Their Peers. Chris Blackwell Believed So Much In Their Charm, He Signed Them To Island Records In 1978. The Line Up Was: Ari Up (vocals), Viv Albertine (Guitar), Tessa Pollitt (Bass) & A Newly Recruited Budgie (Drums) (The Future Mr. Siouxsie Sioux).
U.K. remaster adds two songs.

Spin (p.93) - "[B]y CUT, their proper debut, they'd grown hips and found a groove, just like fellow agitators the Clash or Le Tigre." Cut Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Eargasm What we have here is a faster paced, female version of UB40 but with more galloping bass lines and a Punk attitude. In other words, this is reggae Punk Rock. The subject matter is basically stuff any Punk Rock lovin' Riot Grrrl would experience. But wait, "You want more!?!" Ever seen the movie Oliver? I have many times on cable in the 80's and I liked it! Don't hate me. These slits sure as sh*t sound like those lil' singin' ragamuffins from that movie. I can practically hear "Food, Glorious Food" in every song. These babes even had the balls to do a cover of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" (believe it). Even more strange is that they pulled it off because they didn't try to sound like whoever the hell sang it; they did it in their own style. It gets an extra star for the cover--classic and classless. I'm in love.
This contains two bonus tracks: "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", and "Liebe and Romanze" (slow version). "Liebe..." pretty much sucks and I see no point in including it. Dude, it's like worth minus 2 stars it's soo bad. I think of it as one of those hidden-track closers like The Beatles did with Sgt. Pepper cuz' I don't want to hate on these chickas. In other words, adding bonus tracks neither hurt nor helped this; but it still ain't the same. There's a lot of writing in the booklet, but no lyrics (?) so that means they must suck. I can't recognize a lot of them because of their British accent so I'll have to get around to surfing for them on the net over the next few weeks, months, or years. Cheers.

Excellent Early Punk Rock Album There are several truly great tracks on this CD. "Typical Girls" has to be one of the greatest rock songs ever. Considering the time and place of their career it is surprising they are not more well known. I highly recommend this album. Plus the cover is awesome. Cut
$13.99 This collection includes the 1983 album FILTH and various studio out-takes and live recordings from 1982 to 1985, originally released as BODY TO BODY, JOB TO JOB.
From the center of New York's celebrated downtown music scene emerged a most ugly ducking, the Swans. With a sound like a ditch witch stuck in a tar pit, in 1982 the Swans were the height of noise. Musically, it would be termed proto-industrial, proto-noise rock, but aesthetically it was a sound shot through the axes of power. Strung between the poles ...

$10.45 Built To Spill abandoned any strictly lo-fi leanings long before ANCIENT MELODIES OF THE FUTURE, the band's fifth full-length release, but it is with this album that the trio's near-perfect balance of indie- (almost math-) rock and surprisingly irresistible pop hooks hits stride for a full, satisfying LP. Cut
$6.39 Original score composed and conducted by Henry Mancini. Lyrics written by Leslie Bricusse.
Although the soundtrack to Victor/Victoria came out before this 2002 configuration (once even in an expanded edition), this was the most complete version yet, including as it does 13 previously unreleased tracks. That might be less exciting than it sounds, as all but one of those are instrumental selections by the MGM Studio Orchestra rather than pieces with vocals by the musical's two stars, Julie Andrews and Robert Preston (though there is a previously unavailable rehearsal of "The Shady Dame From Seville" with Preston on vocals). Still, in its favor this package also boasts mastering from the original 24-track ...
| | Paolo Angeli Bucato CD (2003)
Cut
$15.29 Bucato is truly amazing. Paolo Angeli has managed to transform his Sardinian guitar (already an unusual instrument, it is big as a cello and played upright) into a one-man band. Preparations include the addition of many strings, including sitar strings and a set of strings crossing the standard strings at a 90-degree angle over the hole, a mechanical plectrum on the side of the instrument, and a set of pedal-activated piano hammers at the bottom. The instrument is equipped with 13 pickups and microphones that can all be assigned to different paths of amplification. But this mutated creature can sound like a regular instrument: a guitar, a cello (Angeli occasionally uses a bow), a double bass, a koto, a drum, an electronic device, whatever. Novelty is one thing. Being able to play the beast and get something ...
| | Cary Grace Book Of Rhymes CD (2004)
Cut
$11.55 Compelling lyrics and sharply melodic instrumental hooks abound on the debut release by singer/songwriter Cary Grace. Book of Rhymes features a rare depth and diversity of material and presents a keen understanding of human emotion in musical form. Its stylistic influences cross many genres and perhaps define new ones. Cary was born in the United States and lived in Nashville for many years, releasing Book of Rhymes shortly before moving to England where she lives now and is currently writing and recording a second album. Her unique style is difficult to label and derives from influences across a wide spectrum of musical genres."What I listen to is quite ecclectic and the music I make myself definitely reflects that," Cary says. "Writing a song to me is to create a collection of characters and scenes for the listener to infuse ...
