This is the 2000 album from the multi-talented Herbert Vianna, formerly of Paralamas Do Sucesso. This solo album includes 11 songs from the renowned Brazilian musician.
In his new solo album, Herbert Vianna, with several guest stars, mixes several concepts and takes several musical directions. Violence and society, existentialism, and man/woman relationship are discussed in the lyrics, while the music ranges from rock to trad bossa. The album opens with "O Muro." In its gloomy overtones, the song talks about violence and the puzzled society. "História de Uma Bala," delivered with the help of Fernanda Abreu, keeps the dark tone and the focus on unreasonable death by bullets. The sunny folk ballad "Vamos Viver," shared with funk singer Sandra de Sá, has a proclamation for peace and love. "Partir, Andar," a new bossa with Zélia Duncan and arrangements by Eumir Deodato, abandons the previous path to talk about taking the road and leaving an old lover behind. "Mr. Scarecrow," with Cássia Eller, has a more aggressive rock groove and English lyrics. "Hoje Cançoes" has traditional bossa in the partnership with Paulo Sérgio Valle and the unsuspected Nana Caymmi, along with Valle himself in the arrangements, piano, and backing vocals, marking a turn in the album's concept, where the focus is the individual mind. "A Mais," written with Pedro Luís, has Fernanda Takai (Pato Fu) and keeps the self-concerned approach. "Inbetween Days" (Robert Smith), with Erika Martins, goes on with new bossa and individual inquisitions. The blues-influenced "Um Truque" (with bossa and Jovem Guarda touches) introduces the man/woman relationship. "Une Chanson Triste," shared with Daúde, has depressive overtones and lyrics talking about death. ~ Alvaro Neder

Faded old-world flowers adorn both sides of the cover with a big strip of black grease disturbing the lovely imagery on the back. Beginning with Arthur Crudup's "My Baby Left Me," like that other band of famous backup players, the Section, how can this be anything but very musical? Guitarist/vocalist Henry McCullough's "Mistake No Doubt" has eerie backing vocals and is suitably well done, as is his "Let It Be Gone," and though this is far from commercial, it is important to have this document of the guys who made magic behind Joe Cocker in 1969 and Marianne Faithfull in the mid-'70s. This came right in the middle, and the Grease Band's collaborative effort, "Jesse James," could be mistaken for Doug Yule singing Lou Reed's "Train Comin' Round the Bend." Originally released in September 2005, Hayley Westenra's second international album was re-released in April 2006 with only 14 instead of the original 16 tracks. Westenra sings a wide selection of pop-oriented compositions, including Joni Mitchell's "Both Side Now," Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair," and "May It Be" (as featured in The Lord of the Rings), all with the minimum of backing music, mainly just a pure soprano voice beautifully soaring like a bird and leaving its cage behind. One can't help but think of the scene in The Shawshank Redemption when Andy locks himself in the library and plays some opera over a loudspeaker. "Quanta Qualia" has something of the quality of the Clannad hit "Theme from Harry's Game," while "Dell'amore Non Si Sa" is a duet with Andrea Bocelli. There are also a few new folk ballads: "What You Never Know (Won't Hurt You)," "The Mists of Islay," and "She Moves Through the Fair."
