Friendship album
$11.09 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. The opening track features the extraordinary, bell-like ...

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), ...

| | Andy Montanez Salsa Con Reggaeton CD (2006)
Friendship album
$8.45 This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran of the world famous El Gran Combo, a crown in the Puerto Rican salsa crown, collaborated with some of the island's new breed of recording stars. Reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, Cheka, and Voltio are just a few who lend their flow to Montañez's new sound, which he calls "salsatón." The tunes are fun and danceable, a great mixture of thick, live sounds and the block-rockin' sound of the drum machines that give reggaeton its steely spine. Though bringing together a well-seasoned, gray-haired salsa vocalist with raw, contemporary talent may seem like a gamble, it seems to have paid off. Salsa con Reggaetón rose to the Top Five of more than one of Billboard's Latin Music charts. Andy Montañez sounds as strong and artful as he ever did. This is one for the books. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

Friendship CD music
$12.15 Michelle Anthony doesn't reinvent anything on this album, but offers more of the dark and somewhat dingy country ballads that bring to mind Kathleen Edwards, Allison Moorer, or Gillian Welch raised on a heap of alt.country albums. Her songwriting and mundane narrative on the opener, "Mourning Song," visit territory Lucinda Williams touched on during Essence. Produced by former Wilco member Jay Bennett, the album has a world-weary aura that's consistently strong. The pace picks up nicely on the adorable country-cum-roots rock "Don't Deny." Here, Anthony loosens up vocally for a stellar performance and a hook-filled chorus. It's as if Natalie Merchant went to Austin, TX, and never came back. A mellower "All This Time" is pleasing but doesn't quite get over the proverbial bar that the first two did easily. She is more successful on the piano-driven "Radio Waves," which evokes images of an Americana-ized Sarah McLachlan. It perhaps also draws closer to Sheryl Crow's The Globe Sessions. Another sleeper pick might be the pop-tinged "Ivy Rider," which is pure bliss as Anthony shows off her chops. Crow's influence is definitely discerned on "Family Tree (The Ballad of Jack Rice)," which recalls Tuesday Night Music Club or There Goes the Neighborhood. The short and punchy Richards-like riffs can't help "Analog Feeling," though. The sultry blues-meets-pop during ...
