| | Humble Pie Natural Born Bugie CD Humble Pie Discography of CDs
Recorded in session for BBC radio 1 between August 16, 1969 and October 23, 1973. Includes liner notes by Mick Fish.
NATURAL BORN BOOGIE collects the British blues-rock band Humble Pie's first two albums with rarities and B-sides on two CDs. Tracks include "Stick Shift" and "Take Me Back."
NATURAL BORN BOOGIE is a re-sequenced version of Humble Pie's first two albums, SAFE AS YESTERDAY IS and TOWN AND COUNTRY, neither of which got much exposure in America. Success would come later, with the live album PERFORMANCE--ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE, in 1971.
The two albums were showcases for co-founders Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton, both refugees from teeny-bop bands whose relief at finally being able to play their own way initially masked the fact that their styles--Marriott the rowdy blues rocker, Frampton more introspective, with a penchant for acoustic instruments--were rather less compatible than they realized. As a result, the first album is heavy on Marriott's heavy guitar army approach, whereas the second, as its title suggests, has more of a Frampton-influenced pastoral quality.
NATURAL BORN BOOGIE is an interesting collection of live performances from Humble Pie's original incarnation with Peter Frampton. It was mostly recorded in the studio for the BBC (the exception being a concert version of "I Don't Need No Doctor").
The sound is mono and the recording quality is variable, but overall this is a treat for devotees of early '70s Brit rock. The band is loose and funky, and Steve Marriott is at his blues-wailing best on Pie classics like "Natural Born Boogie" (adapted, not to say stolen, from Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie") and "4 Day Creep" (written, unbeknownst to most of the band's fans, by jazz singer Ida Cox).
UK reissue includes both of the British blues-rock act's 1969 albums (both of which are out-of-print in the U.S.), 'As Safe As Yesterday Is' and 'Town And Country', plus both sides of the non-album hit 'Natural Born Bugie' and a raft of rare and previously unissued tracks, 'I'll Drown In My Own Tears', 'For Your Love' (studio jam), '79th Street Blues' (instrumental), 'Greg's Song' (backing track), 'Road To Ride', 'BTMG's' (instrumental), 'Zeptoe Through The Tulips' (instrumental), 'Leave No Turn Unstoned' (aka Just A Riff), 'Every Mother's Son' (alternative mix) & 'The Sad Bag Of Shaky Jake' (demo). 34 tracks in all. 2001 release. Slimline double jewelcase.
Includes liner notes by Roger Dopson.

Natural Born Bugie music CDs
$16.99 2 LPs on 1 CD. Originally released on Decca in 1967 and 1968.
A reissue that combines 1967's Another Side of Rick and 1969's Perspective onto one CD. By 1967, Nelson's records were no longer selling, and were out of step with contemporary trends. So, why not, someone must have reasoned, try to put Nelson in step with contemporary trends on Another Side of Rick? It was about as good a strategy as any, considering that his tried-and-true rockaballad format wasn't working. But giving him fruity psychedelic baroque production was not the answer, indeed yielding rather embarrassing results. Nelson showed good taste by covering three Tim Hardin songs, but producer John Boylan's five songs not only weren't that good, but weren't a good match for the vocalist. Nelson wasn't totally blameless, penning one of the album's crummiest songs, the overdone pop psychedelic "Marshmallow Skies," with James Burton. At one point during the cover of "Georgia on My Mind," the musicians suddenly slip into double-time, as if they can't wait to get the album over with. Although released in February 1969, Perspective had actually been recorded 16 months earlier, an indication that Decca wasn't exactly eager to keep Nelson in the forefront of the market in the late '60s. Like Another Side of Rick, this found him making ill-advised efforts to modernize his sound with a more orchestrated production that often verged on the rococo. Nelson did have good taste in selecting material, covering songs by Paul Simon, Richie Havens, and Harry Nilsson, plus five by Randy Newman to end the album. Producer John Boylan added most of the remaining tunes, including the odd "Hello to the Wind (Bonjour Le Vent)" (co-written with Nelson), which, with its Burt Bacharach-type piano-based melody and brief interlude of spoken female French narration, might find a comfortable home on some lounge music reissue. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Cut Copy Bright Like Neon Love CD (2004)
Natural Born Bugie CD music
$10.15 The Australian dance-pop group Cut Copy, fronted by multi-instrumentalist/DJ/graphic designer Dan Whitford, ends their stellar debut album with "A Dream," a mellow come down from a record scattershot with retro-dance and rock ideas fitted together with ebullient grooves. Perhaps it would have been better served as an introduction to what is such a free flowing, unrestrained electronic dance record. Bright Like Neon Love -- and by extension Whitford -- is so enamored with simple ideals of dance music, it feels like a dreamy, unconscious state of hypnotic rhythms designed purely for easy listening. Conversely, in no way does this strong rookie effort ever really test the listener -- rarely does Whitford expand beyond the confines of catchy synth loops and simplistic, manipulated vocals -- but as a perfectionist of the pop music craft, any one of these nine main tracks (there are two interludes; and "That Was Just a Dream" and "Zap Zap" are really just one song) could have appeared on a Kylie or Madonna record as sure-fire hit singles. At times the rock star in Whitford seems to supersede the '80s pop fanatic, most notably the infectious synth-meets-guitars riff on "Going Nowhere," the largely instrumental "The Twilight" and the near alternative rock/post-grunge of "Bright Neon Payphone," yet the album's greatest strength is how Whitford remains on an even keel throughout, almost melting down his favorite rock and dance elements to their most simplistic state to make them more palatable. As jarring as switching from synths to guitars can be, Bright Like Neon Love remains consistently a pop record. ...
