This CD features a live mix performed by Tatsuo Sunaga of 18 tracks by Fantastic Plastic Machine, the stage name of Japanese recording artist DJ/Tomoyuki Tanaka.
Best known for their theme to the second Austin Powers film, "Bachelor Pad," Fantastic Plastic Machine has been making excellent dance music for the better part of the '90s. Their wonderful blend of bossa nova, Shibuya-Kei, lounge, house, and hip-hop creates a fluid style that never once clashes or creates any awkwardness between songs. In fact, their covers of the Eurythmics' "There Must Be an Angel" and Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out" fit in perfectly between the stop and stutter of "First Class 77" and the quivering vocals of "Bossa for Jackie." The group has some good albums available, but for the sheer number of great songs in one spot, you can not beat DJ Mega-Mix Best, the live mix collection released in 2001. Some may be turned off by the non-stop format (there are no real breaks between songs), but this collection not only works as a whole, but is probably better this way. Fans of the group may not need this, but those looking to check the group out for the first time should definitely invest in DJ Mega-Mix Best. Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts.
