| | Robbie Williams Sing When You're Winning CD Robbie Williams Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
The former Take That heartthrob's follow-up to THE EGO HAS LANDED is so slick and covers so many stylistic bases that one's initial response is that it's too clever by half. On more careful listening, however, it seems more the work of a true pop obsessive, a guy with an encyclopedic enthusiasm for all sorts of music.
The lyrics here are literate, funny, and loaded with attitude (in the good sense); you have to love a guy who can reference John Coltrane, AC/DC, and the Manic Street Preachers on the same album. The music is similarly smart, ranging from high quality dance pop of the boy band variety ("Kids," a duet with Britney Spears' role model Kylie Minogue), to the alt-rock Oasis-meets-Led Zeppelin guitar grind of "Let Love Be Your Energy," to songs that sound uncannily like IMAGINE-era John Lennon ("Better Man"). Best of all, however, is "Rock D.J.," a Cockney-rap track which sounds like modern day Ian Dury until it closes with a lift of the vocal breakdown from Sly Stone's "Dance To the Music." All in all, SING WHEN YOU'RE WINNING is an ambitious and highly entertaining piece of work.
Canadian version of the former Take That vocalist and UK superstar's third album. Includes two bonus tracks, 'Supreme' (sung in French) and 'Better Man' (sung in Spanish) along with the English language versions and the first two singles, 'Rock DJ' and 'Kids' (feat. Kylie Minogue). 2000 release. Standard jewelcase.
Canadian edition adds two songs.

Sing When You're Winning
$15.29 Het was the project of two ex-Furious Pig members, Dominic Weeks and Cass Davies. Their 1984 LP, Let's Het, remains one of the strangest avant-garde items to come out of England during the '80s. Their music is largely based on martial percussion ensembles, with very precise scores. This percussive drive generally evokes the climate of industrial music, but when vocals kick in, like the choir in "Rain," the ghost of Harry Partch hits you in the face like a ton of bricks. The Residents are not far away and either are Frank Zappa's orchestral works, yet in the end Het's music remains utterly unique and unclassifiable. Let's Het is admirably focused. If a couple of tracks run ...

Sing When You're Winning
$14.19 Mick Moloney's McNally's Row of Flats is a fun, quirky recording, a time warp that takes the listener back to another time and place. As a jumping-off place to the late-19th century, Moloney tackled the oeuvre of Ed Harrigan and David Braham, a team who wrote songs that were performed in minstrel shows and vaudeville in the 1870s and beyond. While neither Harrigan or Braham have the name recognition of Stephen Foster today, both were a big deal in their own time, making a financial killing and eventually writing for lavish theatrical productions. The songs included on McNally's Row ...
