| | Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Speed Of Life CD (2009)
And The Hockey Song CD music
$15.09 Speed of Life is the first studio album by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in five years and celebrates the group's 43rd anniversary with three of its original members still intact (and no, the number 43 was not a typo). It also finds them reduced once more to a quartet with the departure of multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Ibbotson. That said, the band has lost none of its immediacy, power, or expert presentation of both original material and songs from some of Nashville's finest. Released by Sugar Hill Records (who distributes their NGDB Records imprint), the group recorded the set live in the studio. Produced by veterans George Massenburg and Jon Randall Stewart, this set sounds inspired, fresh, and like the ...

| | Band Of Heathens One Foot In The Ether CD (2009) Digipak
And The Hockey Song CD music
$11.75 As you might expect from a group fronted by three singer/songwriters, the material on One Foot in the Ether is uniformly strong. The band's principals -- Colin Brooks, Gordy Quist, and Ed Jurdi -- all share writing and publishing credits, and since all three play several instruments, the album boasts a diversity of sounds and styles. The first thing that strikes you is how many of these tunes sound like gospel music. Given the name of the band, it's a real surprise. "Shine a Light" is a mellow, call-and-response number with churchy organ, stinging slide guitar, and an uplifting lyric. "You're Gonna Miss Me" is a blues with a gospel tinge, although the lyric is strictly secular. An odd, stuttering, New Orleans backbeat supplied by drummer John Chipman and rousing group vocals make the track take fire. "Let Your Heart Not Be Troubled" is a love song with a strong hint of gospel and a deep spiritual feeling, a heartfelt expression of ...
| | Gove Scrivenor Shine On CD (1998)
And The Hockey Song music CDs
$15.05 Gove Scrivenor's follow-up to 1988's Coconut Gove is a solid yet non-revelatory release. Scrivenor's rendition of Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You," with guest vocals by Lari White, is a rather faithful rendition and makes for one of the stronger tracks here. Nanci Griffith guests on the title track and John Prine makes an appearance on an excellent take on the Bob Dylan classic "Girl From the North Country." Apart from these moments, and some nice Scrivenor-led autoharp and mandolin instrumentals, there are some decidedly nondescript tracks. One wishes Scrivenor would break ...

And The Hockey Song songs
$10.89 File ANGEL WITH A LARIAT next to Lyle Lovett's self-titled debut, Dwight Yoakam's GUITARS, CADILLACS, ETC., ETC. and Steve Earle's GUITAR TOWN. All four came out from 1986-1987 and were warning shots across the bow of a genre still recovering from the Urban Cowboy syndrome of the early '80s. Between her androgynous look and vegetarianism, Lang sent the most shock waves ...

| | Wrens Meadowlands CD (2003) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
And The Hockey Song CD music
$30.19 The Wrens are an American based four piece who have been a band for over fifteen years, living together for much of that time. 'Meadowlands' is already considered a classic album to those in the know. It was originally released in 2003 to serious critical acclaim and went on to sell in excess of 100,000 records in the USA. During the recording sessions the deaths of a number of the band close relatives in quick succession formed the core reason for the band's all-or-nothing approach, treating every performance and recording as if it's their last. This is a remastered version of Meadowlands and comes with an additional two bonus tracks.
The Wrens' third album, The Meadowlands, is a sprawling, shifting affair, perhaps reflecting the fact that it took four years to create. It's easy to take the sweet, slightly alt-country "13 Months in 6 Minutes" at face value -- the song's epic feel suggests the passing of a considerable chunk of time, and at the Wrens' pace, it's possible that it did take over a year to craft. Rather fittingly, the album itself is also long, and the way that its songs jump and shift in tone and mood suggests a series of journal entries strung together, connected loosely by an overall brokenhearted feeling. A pair of bitterly pretty songs open The Meadowlands after the interlude "The House That Guilt Built" sets the tone with its early summer evening atmosphere: on "Happy," the Wrens sing "Are you happy?/You got what you want/I'm over it now," revealing their true feelings before shimmering guitars carry the song off on another tangent; "She Sends Kisses" goes from whispery, late-night anguish to high drama. Like Secaucus, most of the album trades in a classic indie rock sound -- just this side of accessible, but not overly experimental either. "This Boy Is Exhausted" and the new wavey "Faster Gun" are deceptively simple, bright, and shiny but with underlying complexities ...
