Purchase Legends CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
Legends album
$15.05 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow ...

Legends album
$9.99 Herb Alpert/Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass/Tijuana Brass: Herb Alpert (trumpet); John Pisano (electric guitar); Tonni Kalash (trumpet); Bob Edmondson (trombone); Lou Pagani (piano); Pat Senatore (bass guitar); Nick Ceroli (drums).
Herb Alpert was still using an array of SoCal studio all-stars as his Tijuana Brass when South of the Border (1964) began to restore the combo's good name after the modest Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Vol. 2 (1963) failed to ignite a fire in listener's ears. In his essay accompanying Shout! Factory's 2005 Signature Series reissue of South of the Border, Alpert comments that the Sol Lake composition "Mexican Shuffle" "opened a new door for me." That passageway ...
| | Les Paul & Friends: American Made World Played CD (2005)
Legends CD music
$11.29 Released in celebration of Les Paul's 90th birthday, AMERICAN MADE WORLD PLAYED pays tribute to the master guitarist and inventor who changed the face of jazz, country, blues, and rock with his recording and guitar-design innovations. While the lineup here is stellar and includes vocalists Sting, Joss Stone, and Mick Hucknall (Simply Red), and guitarists Joe Perry (Aerosmith) and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), among others, the album is at its best when ...
| | Milt Hinton Old Man Time CDs (1990)
Legends music CDs
$25.89 Recorded in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey; St. Albans, New York; New York and aboard the cruiseships S/S Norway and M/S Seaward between 1989 and 1990. Includes a 23-page booklet featuring a series of written tributes to Milt Hinton by many renowned jazz bassists, plus liner notes by producer Hank O' Neal and several black and white photographs.
This double-CD set gave bassist Milt Hinton an opportunity to engage in reunions with many of his old friends from the 1930s. The seven sessions were compiled during a 12-month period and the results are often delightful. The opening "Old Man Time" is sung by Hinton himself, and it is both insightful and humorous. The other highlights include Joe Williams singing ...
| | Rez Abbasi Third Ear CD (1995)
Legends songs
$14.19 Though Rez Abbasi can handle hard bop and standards, it is as a fusion and post-bop player that the guitarist has been the most exciting. The L.A. native showed a great deal of promise as both a soloist and a composer on Third Ear, a solid fusion-oriented date employing Kenny Werner (acoustic piano), Marc Copland (electric keyboards), Peter Erskine (drums), the Yellowjackets' Bob Mintzer (tenor & soprano sax) and others. Abbasi isn't one to favor volume for the sake of volume, and his lyrical inclinations serve him well on such thoughtful originals as "For the Birds and the Bees," "Mood Sketch" and the mysterious, Weather Report-ish "Elephant Island." Abbasi's solos give the impression that he was listening to a lot of Pat Metheny at the time (along with some Bill Frisell), although by the late 1990s, Metheny's influence wouldn't be as prominent in his playing. This CD made it clear that Abbasi was someone to keep an eye on. ~ Alex Henderson
Third Ear is Rez Abbasi's Debut album and features Peter Erskine, Marc Johnson, Ken Werner, Bob Mintzer, ...
| | Gabby La La Be Careful What You Wish For... CD (2005)
Legends album
$10.69 Despite her proficiency on sitar, theremin, ukulele, toy piano, and accordion, not to mention a voice somewhat similar to Tiny Tim on helium, Gabby La La is more than simply a novelty act. Her debut album, produced by Primus man Les Claypool and released on his label, is a love-it-or-hate-it affair with La La trilling her way through childlike but strangely effective singalong tunes about golden fleas, "Butter and Eggs," and little fortune cookies. Claypool produces, engineers, and is the disc's only other musician, playing bass and percussion. Whimsical, strange, even avant-garde and psychedelic at times, La La will either intrigue listeners or alienate them. But ...

| | Hans Glawischnig Panorama CD (2008)
Legends CD music
$13.85 A brilliant bassist and a talented composer, Hans Glawischnig has had important associations with Ray Barretto and David Sanchez while being very interested in adventurous and avant-Latin jazz. His originals demand to have masterful musicians perform them, and a glance at the lineup of musicians on Panorama shows that they are treated well. Chick Corea makes two appearances in trios ("Panorama" and "Oceanography"; the latter based on "How Deep Is the Ocean") while the other selections include altoist Miguel Zenón, altoist David Binney or (on the warm ballad "Sea to Sea") tenor saxophonist Rich Perry. One should not overlook the consistently inventive playing of pianist Luis Perdomo, either. While supporting the other soloists, Glawischnig (who often bows during his own solos) plays stimulating lines and keeps the momentum of the music flowing. The hyper "Gypsy Tales," the two Corea appearances and "Beneath the Waves," which sounds a bit like the type of song played by the Keith Jarrett Quintet of the '70s with Dewey Redman, ...
