This six-track debut EP features demo's and early versions of tracks that he eventually re-worked for his debut album, 'Here Be Monsters'. Ed's been been compared with Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley & Randy Newman for his lyrics. He uses a smorgasbord of instruments, brass, strings, banjo and piano amongst others. EMI. 2000.
Personnel: Ed Harcourt (vocals). Audio Mixer: Ed Harcourt. Recording information: Maplewood Studios (2000). Photographer: Steve Gullick. Unknown Contributor Role: Hadrian Garrard. Originally released in 2001, this EP marks the beginning of Ed Harcourt's solo career. The specter of Tom Waits looms very large (with a bizarre stop off at Bill Frissell's Ghost Town) on "I've Become Misguided"; there's even talk of "an old trombone" and "weird things happening under the floorboards." In "He's Building a Swamp," he sings of "living in a burnt out Cadillac/sleeping in a sack/never leaving the track." Remember, this is somebody from the South Coast of England; a beige Mondeo doesn't have the same resonance, so instead we have tired pastiche. Similarly, "The Whistle of a Distant Train" struggles to be poignant, but sounds like a mournful karaoke over a backing of "In the Neighbourhood." Elsewhere there are hints of Beck, especially the chorus of "Hanging With the Wrong Crowd." The ventriloquism continues apace with Bono taking full possession of the Harcourt vocal cords in the strangely free-associative track, "Apple of My Eye": "I'm sick of this angst/don't need thanks/you're the apple of my eye." The best track is "Attaboy Go Spin a Yarn," which is saved by some welcome irony: "I'm not one for nostalgia/don't really like the past...it seems so easy to reflect on times gone by/I expect you'll spin a yarn 'til you die." Hardcourt has some talent, but he really doesn't have his own voice yet. Give him a few more years, and if the originality doesn't kick in, a lucrative career as an impressionist beckons. ~ Mark Joseph

| | Britney Spears B In The Mix-The Remixes CD (2005)
Maplewood
$7.59 The reigning princess of mainstream, candy-coated dance pop released this remix album in 2005 to surprisingly little fanfare. As a high-profile darling of the publicity machine, Spears rarely slips one in under the radar, but there are several reasons for this. One reason is that Spears was on maternity leave at the time of the album's release, making it something of an obligatory stopgap until the artist's next new effort; another is that it contains versions of songs already released on her GREATEST HITS album. Yet B IN THE MIX: THE REMIXES is full of brash, tantalizing, and occasionally brilliant energy. In addition to one new song (the dreamy "And Then We Kiss"), there are some fine reworkings of the pop idol's biggest hits by reputable guest DJs. Peter Rauhofer's pulsing, electro take on "Toxic," for example, is particularly appealing, as is Justice's stomping remix of "Me Against the Music" (which features Madonna), and Jacques Lu Cont's eerie, erotic "Thin White Duke Mix" of "Breathe on Me." These sophisticated electronica interpretations take some of the sugar off the original versions, leaving them leaner, heavier, and more mesmerizing, better suited to the dance club than MTV. Released Thanksgiving week 2005, B in the Mix: The Remixes feels like a piece of hastily assembled product. There are no photos of Spears anywhere on the CD, the artwork seems thrown together and, most of all, there doesn't seem to be any reason for it to exist other than she needs to have a new album for the holiday season. It's been two years since her last proper album, ...

$9.05 Wingin It is the duo of Vakila Marjo ter Veld and Robert Halim Friedman - partners for over twenty years - whose original sound defines the Northern California sound: folk-rock on a reggae foundation. Backed by bass, percussion, keyboards, and additional guitar work on their studio debut Attunement, their original lyrics present Sufi mysticism, social justice themes, nature, and love mixed with lively rhythms. Some years back, the two of them began to sing and play at regular private jam sessions with country and bluegrass musicians. Then their spiritual ...
