The second installation of Jaochim Witt's BAYREUTH contines the intensity of the first volume. "Batallion D'Amour," "Seenot," and "Die Flucht" are among the tracks.
'Bayreuth 2' continues where the 1st left off. It has a wider variety of styles, less stringent, smoother, yet more intense. The music rarely strays from the pattern set on the original & includes all the elements which contributed to the 1st album"'s success. The only difference: the brute strength (a feature of the first album) has been broken down into fine small pieces incorporating sensitive cello arrangements and greater vocal variation without sacrificing any of the LP's intensity. A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.

Originally released back in 1958, this classic album of Alfred Apaka's glorious vocals mixes some basic Broadway show tunes with pop arrangements of Hawaiian compositions. The whole of the album is done over the top of a thick carpet of the lush string arrangements that were so popular at the time, and perhaps made the exotic Hawaiian songs a bit closer to the mainstream for the average listener. The string arrangements seem a bit of an overkill now, perhaps, but the star that rings out despite this is Apaka's voice. Before Don Ho was particularly well known, Apaka had his deep baritone warbling out love songs at a level to compete with Bing Crosby (but with more intensity than Bing tended to use).
