| | Mark Murphy To Find You There CD (2008)
Songs From The Synagogues Of Maghreb songs
$16.45 Mark Murphy – To Find You There. This CD began after I first met guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg. In December of 2006, I had arranged for him to give a Master Class/Concert at the music school I own in South Orange, New Jersey. I’m a big fan of his work, so I was excited to introduce him to a room packed with young music students and local jazz fans. Jonathan gave a solo concert—everyone loved it.  After the crowd cleared, we had a great conversation. When he left, he took with him a CD of 3 songs I had recently recorded. The next time we spoke, he told me how much he’d liked the disc, and before long we were making plans to record together.Initially, To Find You There was intended to be a duo album for Jonathan and me. However, right before we scheduled our first recording date, I had the good fortune to meet Ben Allison—an amazing composer and bass player. I asked him if he would be interested in joining Jonathan and me for a trio recording. Ben was happy to do it, and we went into the studio for one day in January 2007.My original intention for that first session was to record demos of some of my songs.  But after we finished, I realized that we had a great vibe together so, after juggling schedules and writing additional songs, we went back into the studio together in May 2007.  Following those two sessions, I thought I’d use that mix of material for a “drummerless” CD.
However, while I was in the process of mixing the album with Paul Wickliffe at Skyline Studios, I was also obsessively listening to Brad Melhdau’s CD Day is Done, and the Metheny/Mehldau’s Quartet CD. Jeff Ballard, who appears on both albums, is without a doubt, my favorite drummer. I made a decision to try to bring Jeff into the mix. He graciously accepted and we recorded two sessions. The first was in September 2007, and the second in February 2008.
Finally, I am just as lucky to have been able to add vocalist Maria Neckam to four songs on the album. Originally from Vienna, Maria’s voice has a unique, irresistible beauty. And Pianist Aaron Parks is perfect with his contribution for the title track.
To Find You There took 20 months to complete. At the same time, everything ...
