| | Bent Axen Axen CD - Import Bent Axen Discography of CDs
In 1959, modern jazz came of age in Denmark; both Stan Getz and Oscar Pettiford were frequent visitors to the country, and the famous Montmartre club opened. Bent Axen, one of Denmark's top bop pianists, recorded three sessions for the Debut label during a 13-month period, and all of the music has been made available on this 1996 SteepleChase CD. Axen is heard in a working quintet with trumpeter Allan Botschinsky and tenor saxophonist Bent Jaedig on four titles, playing eight others with a sextet that adds Frank Jensen on second tenor, and showcased on seven trio numbers (including a previously unreleased "Jingle Bells"). The latter date is significant for being the recording debut of bassist Niels Pedersen, who was a mere 14 at the time. Throughout the superior set, Axen displays a boppish style influenced by, but not too derivative of Bud Powell. The repertoire mixes together originals with famous American standards. Highly recommended to straight-ahead jazz collectors, this is Bent Axen's definitive jazz release. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Bent Axen (piano); Frank Jensen, Bent Jaedig (tenor saxophone); Allan Botschinsky (trumpet); Ole Laumann, Erik Molbach, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass); Jorn Elniff, Finn Frederiksen (drums).

Axen album
$55.98 Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements. Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to break into her legendary scatting. The main exception is the centerpiece track, a nine-minute take on the Duke Ellington standard "Take the A Train," that gives Fitzgerald ample room to stretch out vocally. Although fans of her scat work might be somewhat disappointed by this mainstream set, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD serves to remind just how gifted a stylist Fitzgerald was in the pop genre as well.

$13.69 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Few jazz pianists could ever hope to rival the technical mastery of Art Tatum. From the 1930s on through the `50s, Tatum's dazzling facility made it seem as if two pianists were playing at once. Though he often performed solo, his virtuosity allowed him to make the transition from swing to bebop effortlessly. Tatum's eclectic style also reflected influences from blues and classical music, and from early jazz and pop music of the time.
Long considered a classic album, PIANO STARTS HERE was assembled from studio and live sources from 1933 and 1949, respectively. Thanks to 21st-century technology however, PIANO has received a new lease on life, containing previously edited selections presented in their entirety, previously unissued tunes, and ...
| | Roy Hargrove Emergence CD (2009)
Axen album
$13.99 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs restraint to bring forth his gorgeous melody. It's followed by "Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," written and arranged by baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall. It quotes liberally from "Wade in the Water" and "Hit the Road Jack," but is a stomping, raucous blues in its own right with the wide chromatic and harmonic range of the brass section on full display, and contains a smoking solo break by Hargrove. Some of the standards that really shine are an unusually restrained and utterly elegant "My Funny Valentine" and the finger-popping "September in the Rain," the former arranged by bass trombonist Max Siegel and the latter by Hargrove. Frank Lacy's "Requiem" is here, and is the most imaginative tune on the set; arranged by the composer, it walks a solid line between modern post-bop jazz and modern classical composition. Roberta Gambarini is the guest vocalist on "Every Time We Say Goodbye," and does a knockout job. There are a couple of Latin numbers on the set as well, and they just smoke: "Mambo for Roy," written ...

| | Firehouse Five Plus Two 16 Dixieland Favorites CD (1986)
Axen music CDs
$7.95 This CD reissues the complete set originally titled Dixieland Favorites plus adds five other selections from other dates. Most of the music dates from 1958-60 when the Firehouse Five Plus Two was at the peak of its popularity. Unlike most of their other releases, all of the selections on this CD are dixieland standards including such songs as "Fidgety Feet," "Muskrat Ramble," "Royal Garden Blues" and even "When the Saints Go Marching In." An excellent second-level band, the Firehouse Five Plus Two made up in spirit for what they generally lacked in originality. A fun release. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Warren Hill Popjazz CD (2005)
Axen music CDs
$14.29 Warren Hill has long been pegged as a David Sanborn imitator in jazz circles. Actually Hill has gradually developed his own voice within smooth pop music although he has never shown the desire to move much beyond his melodic themes. On Popjazz he actually jams a little over the "Giant Steps" chord changes on the closing "Bridgin' the Gap" although even here he sticks close to the new melody. Other tunes find Hill sometimes almost stretching a little but mostly staying in his own comfort zone. His backup band is pretty anonymous and most of these selections, although pleasing as background music, are interchangeable. In Hill's version of "popjazz," the jazz element is very light. ~ Scott Yanow
