Matthews: Great Journey, Etc.
$8.79 Though Dutch indie rockers Bettie Serveert wouldn't make a big splash on the alt-rock scene until their second album, the band's debut, PALOMINE established the template for their sound. As with much of their other work, PALOMINE is a study in contrasts. It alternates between brashly rocking and quietly reflective, sometimes within the same song. One of the most immediately striking things about the album is just how American these Hollanders sound. Echoes of the Velvet Underground, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and Sonic Youth abound, as fuzzed-out guitars switch between creating an urgent din or setting an ethereal mood.
Singer Carol van Dyk follows those radical dynamic shifts step for step, cooing coyly on the gentler tracks and delivering a solid vocal punch when things heat up. PALOMINE sometimes falls between the cracks for casual admirers who think Bettie Serveert's career began with the aforementioned sophomore release, LAMPREY, but it's an important initial salvo in the band's distinctive brand of whispering thunder.

| | Andrea Bocelli Romanza CD (1997)
Matthews: Great Journey, Etc.
$10.49 Andrea Bocelli was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli is one of those rare artists who is equally comfortable on both sides of the pop/classical fence. Discovered by Italian pop sensation Zucchero, Bocelli, whose blindness is no hindrance to his musical insight, has made an international splash in both the pop and opera worlds. He's worked with Luciano Pavarotti and Bryan Adams with equal ease, and his all-encompassing musical prowess can be easily heard on ROMANZA. The album weaves his strong, expressive, classically-trained voice through some elegant contemporary material. Many songs have a political bent that brings to mind the socially-conscious lyricism of artists like Milton Nascimento. Roll over, Luciano, and tell Michael Bolton the news.

| | Jean-Luc Ponty Taste For Passion CD (1979)
Matthews: Great Journey, Etc.
$7.59 Despite the title, this release is more subdued than its predecessors on the shelves, more tightly controlled, more conventional in instrumentation. Jean-Luc Ponty temporarily pulls back on electronic display for its own sake, even permitting some acoustic instruments to take the fore, and the recorded sound is drier and less lustrous. Nevertheless, Ponty's urbane Euro-sensibility can still be felt strongly in these carefully conceived and "orchestrated" jazz-rock compositions for his six-piece group. "Beach Girl," with its locomotive-driven chorus surrounded by folk-like passages, is the most memorable tune of the lot. If you can overlook the dated timbres of the ARP (a long-defunct company) synthesizers and the flat acoustics that place this music squarely within its decade, this music can still give pleasure to today's CD fans. ~ Richard S. Ginell

$22.39 | | Andrea Bocelli My Christmas CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
Matthews: Great Journey, Etc.
$19.30 Andrea Bocelli's 2009 My Christmas album finds the Italian tenor performing various classic holiday-themed songs that touch on a mix of classical, opera, and pop. Included are such well-known holiday songs as "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "O Tannenbaum," and "Silent Night." The versatile Bocelli also delves into such iconic Christmas hits as "Blue Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" (featuring a duet with Natalie Cole). Of course, the opera and classic songs are Bocelli's bread and butter, and here listeners get such lavishly produced cuts as "Adeste Fidelis," "Cantique del Noel," and "Caro Gesu Bambino." My Christmas is not only a warm and inviting holiday album, but also a superb classical crossover entry worthy of Bocelli's discography. ~ Matt Collar
