Scotland's Royal Highland music CDs
$14.65 Yet another gorgeous outing from this Scottish group, one that combines, as usual, the band's respectful take on traditional material with its devotion to synthesized, exceedingly funky arrangements. It's a fusion that works far better than you'd think it would, in large part due to the power of Karen Matheson's crystalline voice. Beautiful Wasteland was recorded in the mountains of Andalucia, in Southern Spain, and if the album's sound isn't exactly Mediterranean, there's definitely a certain laid-back looseness to much of the proceedings. "M'Ionam" is a traditional song given a lush, sensual arrangement with an almost techno-ish breakbeat buried deep in the mix; "The Tree" combines a gentle sort of acoustic house groove with traditional puirt-a-beul (the unaccompanied, syncopated singing that is often used to ...

| | Greg Brown Iowa Waltz CD (1981)
Scotland's Royal Highland songs
$14.05 Though he eventually became a master of dark, bluesy songwriting that would earn him such titles as "the Midwestern Leonard Cohen," Greg Brown started out in a much folkier mode. IOWA WALTZ is something of a concept album centered on the rural Iowa landscape that was his breeding ground. The sarcasm and grittiness of his later albums is absent here; Brown sticks to more traditional folk forms and acoustic frameworks to tell his tales of a country life that was already close to extinction at the time of this recording.
Brown displays the influence of Mississippi John Hurt in his casual folk-blues fingerpicking and easy, friendly singing style, Woody Guthrie in his painstakingly detailed accounts of farm folks' lives, and Jimmie Rodgers in his jazz/blues-tinged take on country--the latter most obviously in "The Train Carrying Jimmie Rodgers Home." Dave Moore's bluesy harmonica and Al Murphy's country fiddling add spice, but it's Brown's sheer amiability and charismatic vocal presence that carry things along. The sound quality here is less than stellar, but that just adds to IOWA WALTZ's already anachronistic ambience.
"The Iowa Waltz blows in like a fresh breeze on first listening...a collection of immediate favorites." - City Pages (Mpls/St. Paul)

Scotland's Royal Highland music CDs
$8.59 "Q: What does oz music need? A: More girls who rock!! and Lisa does!" - MusicPlug.netLisa Maxwell's debut EP 'Bad Day' is an amazing debut effort from this vibrant and outgoing country Victorian female rocker. Lead track 'Bad Day' is a captivating 3 min energy powerhouse with punchy rock/pop sounds and irresistible hooks and melody, while tracks such as 'Delusion' and 'Ego' display a darker side to Lisa's songwriting and her ability to write intriguing and aggressive guitar parts. Lisa Maxwell has enjoyed local and international radio and television airplay. Featured nationally on ABC-TV's Rage program and On Demand broadband website were the videos 'Bad Day', 'Delusion' and the popular track 'Harmonic Rock' with its bizarre clip inspired by the Japanese cult horror film Ring. In response, hundreds of Rage viewers have registered and downloaded these clips from Durrant's rewindthat. net website, joining a worldwide user group who are currently enjoying Lisa's unique style of dark Aussie rock. In 2003 Lisa was signed to an Arts Victoria recording project produced by Bent Records label owner Jamie Durrant. Chosen from a group of 500 Victorian bands and artists, Lisa Maxwell soon became pick of the ...
