Babacar album
$9.79 The late-'90s swing revival came as an unexpected phenomenon. Before anyone knew it, ballrooms everywhere where crowded with hipsters dancing to the horn-driven sounds of Louis Prima, Louis Jordan and other jump blues legends. The contemporary crop of swing bands had something to add to the style too, and they leaped onto the charts with a combination of old and new that came to be termed "neo-swing."
SWING THIS BABY, represents the best of those '90s hep cats, collected in one convenient package for easy access. Neo-swing ...
| | Bob Marley Catch A Fire: Deluxe Edition CDs (1973) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Babacar CD music
$19.59 It is nearly impossible to imagine a time when reggae was not part of the cultural currency. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. CATCH A FIRE hit with the force of a revelation when it was released in 1973, and though Chris Blackwell tailored its sound with a rock audience in mind, the album was still unlike anything that had ever come down the pike. Ironically, even given its relatively full production and electric guitar solos, CATCH A FIRE sounds more organic and rootsy than any of the Wailers' subsequent releases.
While the percolating rhythms and burbling bass lines of the Barrett brothers, and the sweet, impeccable harmonies of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer soothe and move, CATCH A FIRE also introduces the conscious, politically minded themes that would remain at the center of Marley's songwriting for the rest of his career. ...

| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
Babacar CD music
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those ...
| | Wizard Women Of The North CD (1999)
Babacar music CDs
$10.45 Includes liner notes by Permille Anker, translated by Shari Nilsen.
In the Land of the Midnight Sun, when a woman needs to gather a scattered herd, she resorts to singing in the distinctive and far-reaching vocal style known as "kulning." It is that beckoning that starts Wizard Women of the North, a collection of leading Nordic women. Sylvan spirits and fjord-filling fog populate this ancient land in the mind. The distinctively talented and exotically styled female vocalists and instrumentalists on this album make that magical realm a reality. As for ...
| | Blue Orchids From Severe To Serene CD (2003) Import; Reissued
Babacar songs
$14.29 Features John Peel radio sessions from December 1980 and May 1982, the complete RIDING THE TIMES ep, live tracks and rarities.
LTM's well-regarded abilities to get comprehensive reissues together continue with the Blue Orchids' efforts, though this is perhaps one of the craziest quilts the label has yet put together. There are two John Peel sessions from the band's earliest days and a slew of live cuts from around the same time, but smack dab in the middle is the one EP from Thirst, a semi-interim band led by Martin Bramah in the late '80s. Still, what matters most of all is the availability of the music, and more than a few obsessives (Fall-inspired or otherwise) who had held onto their crumbling tapes of the original Peel broadcasts were doubtless thrilled at the appearance of this disc. Said radio recordings take up the first seven tracks of the disc, with the first covering the "Work"/"The House That Faded Out" days (the version of the former is really grand, Bramah's end of song monologue a spot-on rant) and the second selections from their justly legendary Greatest Hits album. Bramah's singing here is just wonderful, and the takes on "No Looking Back" and ...

David Hughes is a name that we all need to remember"- Bonnie Schendell/Smoothviews.com"...Hughes delivers funk-laden grooves, guitar-like chordal voicings, and many horn-influenced solos. Although Hughes' virtuostic ability as a bass player is completely apparent throughout this recording, it never obscures the emotionally evocative experience he is attempting to convey to the listener.""Hughes proves that he is a premier bassist who definitely deserves wider acknowledgment." -International Institute of Bassists "...the Crusaders' standard "Always There" was the set's standout, with six-string electric bassist David Hughes bringing guitar sensibilities into the chords as he went beyond providing mere foundation."-Philadelphia Inquirer "...His six-string instrument definitely gives him the room to redefine the jazz fusion genre."-AllaboutJazz "Millertime shows David in the role of a deserving Marcus-Miller-successor.
