M usic for people who get sculpture (you know who you are). This music was originally conceived for a film on sculptor Mark Di Suvero, and later remixed and released as North Star. As one of Philip Glass' early works, the album helped introduce his idiosyncratic style to listeners (although I bought it based on the post-Einstein buzz). EMI. 2003.
Released on Virgin in 1977, NORTH STAR is comprised of 10 short pieces originally composed for a documentary about the sculptor Mark Di Suervo, and represents composer Philip Glass's first foray into the rock world. The small group--Glass on keyboards, New Music vocalist Joan LaBarbara, Dicky Landy on reeds--is a reduced edition of the original reed-and-organ driven Philip Glass Ensemble, and is very characteristic of the hands-on '70s Soho art scene from which Glass and the other early minimalists emerged. But one listen to the soaring title track confirms that, despite the reduced forces, there is no diminution in the power or beauty of Glass's early music. This concise set is still a perfect introduction to Glass and authentic early minimalism, recorded just before he expanded (and softened) his sound in the '80s.
Personnel includes: Philip Glass (keyboards); Joan LaBarbara (vocals); Dickie Landry (flute, saxophone); Gene Rickard.

| | Glass: Solo Piano / Philip Glass CD (1989)
North Star music CDs
$9.99 With SOLO PIANO, Glass presents himself "unplugged" - no electronic keyboards or synthesizers, and no overdubs, either - just solo piano. Here, Glass' connection to the established "classical" tradition is most evident. Though his pieces are "minimal" (subtly altered repeated patterns or melodic motifs), yet they have an unsentimental beauty and heartfelt grace that one would hear in J.S. Bach's English Suites, as well as the piano music of Chopin and Erik Satie. Portions of the suite 'Metamorphosis' ...

$12.99 Two Pages' liner booklet includes a fine photograph: the 1971 riverside debut of Glass' group, presented as low rent, public permit spectacle. The Philip Glass Ensemble sit in concentration over their instruments, with the Brooklyn Bridge lights appearing next to them. Mop-haired Glass wears jeans and denim jacket while leaning into his electric organ, the lights of Manhattan in view across the water behind him. By the '90s, he made an estimable public success of his opera and movie scores, rarely presenting electric music. But he didn't forget his roots as a bandleader. In 1987, the Ensemble recorded the second half of Music in Twelve Parts, then released them with ...
