Gong proper didn't come together until November of 1969. However, this recording, made a few months earlier, features the nucleus of that band along with a few friends, pursuing the same basic vision. Australian hippie/beatnik Daevid Allen was the band's guiding light, and his philosophical insights were leavened by humorous imagery that he later developed into an elaborate mythological world. Though the early sound of Gong, as represented here, was basically psychedelic folk-rock, Allen was musically informed enough to bring more outre influences to bear--the original album cover cites the influence of Monk, Terry Riley, Satie, Mingus, Soft Machine (a band he helped create) and others. This free-wheeling jazz/avant garde influence was key in setting Gong apart from the pack. Noted free jazz pianist Burton Greene even guests on one track. An auspicious beginning.
French reissue of the British prog-rock act's 1970 debut album. 10 tracks including, 'Mystic Sister/Magick Brother', 'Glad To Sad To Say' & 'Rational Anthem'. Packaged in a gatefold digipak.Mojo (Publisher) (p.122) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A]n overlooked gem....Moments of Barrett-like pastoralism and Pythonesque silliness are cut with a surprisingly punkish DIY vibe." | | Passport Cross-Collateral CD (1998) Reissued
Magick Brother
$9.55 'Cross-Collateral' was originally issued in 1975. Wounded Bird Records winds up it's series of CD re-issues by the German jazz-fusion group Passport.
You can get quite an argument going about what Passport really is -- rock fans hear a very accessible jazz outfit, and jazz fans hear a progressive rock band with real ...
| | Barrabas Forbidden CD (1984) (Import) Spain
Magick Brother
$13.99 Barrabas' 1984 return is a very slight improvement over the pair of 1982 albums that are best left forgotten, only evident in the fact that the band seems more comfortable and into what they're doing. This band would have served a better purpose in the '80s if they had used more female vocalists. The playing is always top-notch ...
| | Wanna Meet The Scruffs? CD (1977) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom
Magick Brother
$12.23 There must have been something in the water in 1970s Memphis. Not only did the town turn out an unprecedented amount of great R&B, it also hosted a sterling power-pop scene including Big Star, Tommy Hoehn, Van Duren, and Anglophile quartet the Scruffs. Led by McCartney-esque vocalist Stephen Burns, the Scruffs mixed Beatle worship, Big Star-ish rockers, and Raspberries-like pop on their 1977 debut album, WANNA MEET THE SCRUFFS? which became a power-pop cult classic. The Scruffs split up in '79 (though Burns would lead a new version decades later) but ...
| | Ginger Baker's Airforce CD (1970)
Magick Brother
$13.75 Reissue of the acclaimed drummer's 1970 post Cream project, recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall. He is joined by many special guests here including, Steve Winwood, Rick Grech, Chris Wood, Denny Laine, Graham Bond & more.
For a change, the late 1960s yielded up a supergroup that lived up to its hype and then some. Ginger Baker's Air Force was recorded live at Royal Albert Hall in January of 1970 -- in fact, this may be the best-sounding live album ever to come out of that notoriously difficult venue -- at a show that ...

| | Swell Maps Trip To Marineville CD (1979)
Magick Brother
$11.65 A TRIP TO MARINEVILLE is the debut album from eclectic post-punk band Swell Maps, featuring Nikki Sudden. Tracks include "H.S. Art" and "Gunboats".
Japanese edition includes b-sides, rarities, and enhanced video.
Brothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks started the Swell Maps in the early 1970s while in their teens. The band's chaotic mix of arty experimentalism, garage primitivism, and punk rock gumption established a template for the British DIY post-punk movement of the late '70s and early '80s. The band's 1979 debut, A TRIP TO MARINEVILLE, perfectly captures the band's two disparate yet strangely compatible elements. Songs such as "Spitfire Parade," "Another Song," ...
| | Velvet Underground Live At Max's Kansas City: Deluxe Edition CDs (1972) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Magick Brother
$13.65 Booklet notes include interview excerpts with Doug Yule, Billy Yule, Danny Fields, Brigid Berlin (Polk), Moe Tucker and Jim Carroll.
A far cry from the fervor of the seminal LIVE 1969, this live recording, though it was made only a year later, is the swan song of the Velvet Underground. Velvets fan/friend Brigid Polk brought her home cassette machine to this gig at one of the band's favorite NY haunts to ...
| | Peter Frampton Gold CDs (2005) Remastered
Magick Brother
$15.09 Although British guitarist/singer/songwriter Peter Frampton is best known for his blockbuster 1976 live double-album FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE!, GOLD reminds us that he was churning out polished, radio-ready rock from the early '70s well into the early 2000s. GOLD is divided into two discs: the first picks up with 1972's WIND OF CHANGE and continues through COMES ALIVE!, giving a thorough overview of the years that rocketed the artist to stardom.
While the compilation is varied and inclusive enough to cover all phases of Frampton's career, it is weighted toward his best material. For instance, 1975's FRAMPTON is represented by seven songs (including the medley of "Nassau/Baby I Love Your Way," the latter being one of Frampton's signature tunes), with ...
| | Frobeck Over & Beyond CD (2008)
Magick Brother
$12.69 How it all started...Together since 2005, Frobeck has been astonishing audiences throughout the Bay Area with their unique blend of Pop, Funk and Soul music, but their story begins much earlier. Each member of Frobeck brings their own vibe and talent to the band, and has made Frobeck a self contained entity in the music industry. Spencer Burrows has been a prominent figure in the Sonoma County music scene since the age of 13, and began performing in local clubs long before the law would allow. It was in this circuit where he first met bass extraordinaire Steve Froberg and their lifelong friendship was forged backing up folks like Eric Lindell and Levi Loyd. Throughout the following years, Spencer and Steve would share the stage with numerous acts, but not until Frobeck would they perform together as of one of the North Bay\'s premiere musical talents. While Spencer and Steve were performing live, Kris Dilbeck and Cory Stück were staying busy in the Sonoma State University Music Department and recording studio. The duo was nearly inseparable as a production and engineering team, and during their time at SSU managed to track and record albums (Young Tree, Each One Teach One) for the industry’s leading roots reggae band ‘Groundation’. Cory was also playing drums in the local favorite funk trio ‘Groove Instinct\', while Kris focused and worked as a studio player. Kris, Cory and Spencer met while attending Sonoma State University, yet their collaborative future together was unknown. Following graduation from SSU, Kris went off to Berklee College of Music in Boston where he received a degree in Music Production and Engineering. Cory also furthered his skills and attended Ex’pression Center for New Media in Emeryville, CA, and graduated with distinction as one of the top students in his class. Kris and Spencer’s relationship really began to blossom during Kris’ ...
