Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night.

When Geffen released Hits early on in 2004, there were a few New Edition compilations previously available, each one with its own set of problems. Released in 1991, Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 (looks like that second volume will never happen) threw in only 11 cuts; 1998's Lost in Love: The Best of Slow Jams obviously left out the upbeat numbers; 2000's All the Number Ones ignored a number of significant, albeit lower-performing, hits. More importantly, almost all of these sets -- including 1996's New Edition Solo Hits -- featured solo material recorded by various members of the group (along with the occasional Bell Biv DeVoe hit). Originally released in 1980, Stiv Bators' first solo album was re-released in 1993 by Bomp, which added eight extra tracks not available on the original version (all recorded live at the Berkeley Square in May of 1980). Like his other Bomp solo release, the L.A., L.A. compilation, the music is more similar to '60s power pop than the vicious punk rock that Bators was originally known for as a member of the Dead Boys. Although the bonus tracks are comparable in approach to his former band (they even manage to cover a pair of Dead Boys classics -- "Sonic Reducer" and "I Need Lunch"), Bators plays it more pedestrian elsewhere. Surprisingly, he pulls off this different direction convincingly; after all, this music was his favorite when he was growing up.
