Goin' Public's music falls into the contemporary jazz/smooth jazz area, being mildly funky and R&B-ish jazz. The musicianship is excellent and the originals are likable, but none of the musicians display an original personality. Guitarist John Valentino has the best spots and shows versatility, sounding like Wes Montgomery one moment and closer to Larry Carlton the next. Overall, this is a relaxing set of superior background music. No chances are taken, but it does create a pleasant atmosphere. ~ Scott Yanow
"I love the variety that L.A. offers in terms of musical opportunities, from classical to rock and roll, but for all of us, our real passion is jazz"Rick Rossi, sax player - Goin PublicGoin Pulic is a young band that delivers a blend of cool, edgy jazz and R&B Funk. The band's self-titled 1995 debut album gained them quite a following with its blend of jazz and hip hop. On this new CD they are joined by guest artists percussionist Luis Conte (Sting, Miles Davis) and Bass Clarinet Player Bennie Maupin (Herbie Hancock)"Preferring a combination of danceable back beats and simpler melodies alongside Luis Conte's congas, bongos & percussion arsenal, Goin Public provides a forum for the adventuresome solo work of guitarist [Johhnny Valentino], pianist [Ken Burgomaster]and saxophonist [Rick Rossi] Rick Rossi's timbre is unique; his solo presentation on "Discrete Desires" wafts beautifully and his doubling with guitar produces a sliding effect much like that of a violinist. "Step By Step" and "Three Fenders In The Corner" feature some fluid and exciting tenor saxophone work. "Free Exchange", the title track, finds the natural blend of Maupin's bass clarinet and the background singers; it's representative of the entire session, in that this is a team effort with blending and doubling giving it that distinctive charm."

Free Exchange album
$14.80 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice ...

| | Ornette Coleman Complete Live At The Hillcrest Club CD (2007) Spain
Free Exchange songs
$9.19 Ornette Coleman's epic 1959 LPs The Shape of Jazz to Come and Change of the Century were pivot points in modern post-bop jazz and early creative music. This recording is a prelude to those epics, a live two-night engagement in October of 1958 at the Hillcrest Club in Los Angeles. The Coleman quintet, with trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Billy Higgins, plus a then-young pianist Paul Bley, sets up that new shape of jazz. This eight-selection set features three of Coleman's signature originals, two standards, and three lesser-known, fairly rare pieces that Coleman did at the time. The program kicks off with Charlie Parker's "Klactoveedsedstene," an on-fire free bopper where Coleman's alto sax in tandem with Cherry reflects a quest for cleanliness and innocent, alive freshness, well transferred, balanced, and reproduced digitally. Whoever tagged this music unlistenable needs to revisit the symbiosis of the front-line horns present. Three of Coleman's all-time immortal compositions on call are the relaxed and easily swung harmolodic dream "The Blessing" accented by Ornette's piquant alto, the call-and-response-laden "When Will ...
