Acid Jazz Volume 2
$10.29 John Sturges's remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic THE SEVEN SAMURAI has become an influential film in its own right. A small Mexican village that makes involuntary donations of its harvest to a gang of bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach) decides to hire a group of professional gunmen, headed by gunslinger-for-hire Chris (Yul Brynner), to protect them. Despite the meager pay, Chris and ...

Acid Jazz Volume 2
$21.59 Approaching the legendary German classic 1922 film NOSFERATU: EIN SYMPHONIE DES GRAUENS by F.W. Murnau with his own unique sensibilities, Werner Herzog establishes a link between himself and the classic days of German cinema and in the process crafts a lush adaptation as well as a classic in its own right. Stark, symbolic cinematography and intensely stylized performances create ...

Acid Jazz Volume 2
$9.79 RENEGADE is an ambitious hybrid of genres that occupies a liminal space similar to that of its main character, Mike Blueberry (Vincent Cassel). Building on the conventions of the Western and adding psychedelic elements and the sophisticated - albeit atypical - European sensibilities of director Jan Kounen, the result is a fascinating and compelling existential film about self-definition and the untapped regions of the mind.
The film opens with a teenage Blueberry (Hugh O'Conor), a recent transplant to the southwest from the Cajun territory of Louisiana. He quickly becomes embroiled in a battle with local bad guy Wallace Sebastian Blount (Michael Madsen) when Blount gets violent during a visit to prostitute Madeleine, for whom Mike has fallen. Madeleine is killed in the fray, and the injured Mike is run out of town, surviving due ...

Acid Jazz Volume 2
$10.05 Among the scariest movies ever put on celluloid, like its similarly styled sister, RINGU, this tale of death-by-curse is nothing short of blood chilling. With chapters named after each subsequent victim, it plays like a series of increasingly daunting, deadly vignettes. All of the stories surround a haunted house where the evil spirit of a 5-year-old boy still lurks. The first to enter the residence and be cursed is a young hospice worker visiting an elderly client. She finds the boy duct-taped in a closet, where he first appears to her in the form of a black cat, and then shows his human form which is a shockingly ghoulish white face and blackened eyes. Invisible to all except for those who are next to die, his presence ...

Acid Jazz Volume 2
$16.29 Three years after their formation, Skanic finally released this, their debut album. Taking 2 Tone down exciting new avenues, the San Diego area group unleashes a baker's dozen of upbeat tracks, filled to the brim with brass and driven by compulsive ska and reggae rhythms. Many of the group's songs boast a dark, angry edge that defined the Specials' sound, particularly noticeable on "Eyesore," albeit in a rockier context, and "Temper," but also pooling around "Yard Duty" and "Don't Dance Too Hard," both of which blend in a barreling exuberance that tips a porkpie hat to Madness as well. But with that full brass section flashing around and strutting through the arrangements, Skanic incorporate a jazzy flair reminiscent of the Skatalites, a styling fabulously showcased ...

Acid Jazz Volume 2
$23.29 The Collectables compilation California Dreamin' is a ten-track, budget-priced set that contains some of the Mamas & the Papas's best-loved tunes, including "Monday, Monday," "Go Where You Wanna Go," "Words of Love," and "California Dreamin'" plus six other minor hits. As budget-line collections go, California Dreamin' isn't bad, especially since it contains the original versions of these tracks, but better collections are available for not much more money. Pick up the 1998 remastered edition of Greatest Hits on MCA instead. ~ Al Campbell
MCA Special Products' California Dreamin' boasts a blend of hits and album tracks, highlighted by "Monday, Monday," "Sing for Your Supper," "Glad to Be Unhappy," and the title track. Although this is a far cry from a definitive hits collection or even an informative overview, it's nevertheless an entertaining sampler that should be of interest to budget-minded casual fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Collection of tracks by these contemporaries of The Beach Boys and other Southern California Sunshine Pop bands. Although often considered a Folk act, this quartet were more about Flower Power than the Cumberland Gap! 24 tracks total including a few solo tracks from Mama Cass. Features 'Monday Monday', 'Dream A Little Dream Of Me', 'California Dreaming' and more. Universal. 2006.
California Dreamin': The Songs of the Mamas & the Papas is a one-hour documentary prepared for public television, to be shown during pledge drives to get those baby boomers to call in and contribute. As its title and the TV-G rating that pops up right at the beginning suggest, this look at the group is more interested in the music than in wallowing in the backstage scandals much loved by, for example, VH1 Behind the Music, which spent a very different hour chronicling the Mamas & the Papas' career a few years earlier. Not that ...
